A friend of mine recommended Diplomatic Relations to me and  it was on my to-read-list forever. Once I started, it didn’t take me more than 6 chapters at most to know I’d want to read the story again.

I read about slate veneer a few years ago and knew immediately this was the book to go experimenting with it. So I ordered my materials and started setting and printing the story. Folding the sigantures I noticed this book was going to have a considerable swell.  Usually I first fold the single pages, gather them to signatures and then increase the fold with a bonefolder. That’s quicker than doing it for every single sheet and also leads to better results. If each paper is folded with a bonefolder you get very sharp angles that don’t fit together very well in the gathered signature. Plus they add to page creep and result in a way rougher foredge.  The swelling was still a lot and I put the gaterhed signatures in a press (not all together but 10 in pack with the closed side of the signature of 5 to one side, and 5 to the other) for a few days. The packages were separated wooden boards (and a piece of thin smooth and colourless cardboard) to even out anything that might damage the paper while pressing it . The separation in small packages keep an even pressure on the signatures and prevents them from slipping away when the pressure increases.  EDIT:

On the left is the signature folded by hand and later increased with a bonefolder (after gathering the signature). On the right the single sheets were folded with a bonefolder right away, You can see the larger gaps between the folds simply because there’s no room for more paper in the sharp angle the bonefolder creates.  Of course you can take your pages to form one signature and fold them in one go. It’s way quicker than folding every single page. Personally I wouldn’t do that though. Because that way you won’t get an exact center fold on each of the pages and the text will be even more out-of-register as it might be from printing, which, at the end, messes up the margins. 

Downside, the signature bulges a bit (again the on the left is the one I folded by hand first and only worked over with a bonefolder after gathering the signature). That’s why I put them in the press for a night or two.

"The top 2 are quartz, the middle from left to right are quartzite, orthoclase feldspar (x2), and schist. The bottom is another orthoclase chunk," i found these rocks on my covid hike and a cool person on reddit identifyed them for me 😲

534 Mica Schist

Mica-Schist is a rock composed essentially of Quartz and Mica, usually either Muscovite or Biotite. The Mica is the prominent mineral, occurring in irregular leaves and in foliated masses. The Mica plates all lie with their cleavage planes parallel to each other and give to the rock a striking laminated or "schistose" structure.
