Our Sixth Anniversary Adventure

Last night’s low was 59 degrees, and today’s high reached 76. But we were gone for most of the day, so any details on what it was like in Springfield are sketchy at best. Our day was not too hot or too cold, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves throughout.

My blood sugar dropped to 166 this morning. Hurrah!

After we had our coffee and played the Sunday brain games, we showered and dressed, ate some cinnamon toast, and hit the road for our sixth anniversary adventure.

Our first stop was to fill the gas tank at Costco ($3.64 per gallon). Then we jumped on I-5 and headed for Canby and the Swan Island Dahlias festival. Probably because it was Sunday, the traffic on the interstate was not too bad. It did slow down at one point, but after the traffic picked back up there was no reason evident. Most likely just people slowing down to see what they thought was happening.

The Swan Island event and parking were both free, and Nancy and I were immediately overwhelmed by the color and variety of the dahlias present. There were also a lot of bees. Close to half the nearly 300 photos I shot might have had bees in them.

We spent almost two hours on site, and Nancy bought a bunch of dahlias to bring home. There were food trucks on site, but none of them appealed to us, so we left. While we were pulling out, Nancy searched for and found a local restaurant just a couple of miles away.

The Filbert Farmhouse Kitchen in Aurora was an excellent find. We had to eat out on the porch because all the inside seats were taken, but the weather was nice, and we were quite comfortable. Although a bee kept flying around us, eventually dipping into Nancy’s chicken and dumplings briefly, then skittering around on the floor like it had gotten drunk. I had a toasted cheese sandwich with bacon and tomato, with a cup of tomato basil bisque on the side. The food was quite good.

While we were wrapping up the meal, Nancy suggested we could run over to the town of Banks. It took about 45 minutes to get there, and we found a great big “Welcome to Banks” sign on the edge of the town, so we got out and took a selfie of the two of us in front of it.

Then we stopped a several places long the main street running through the small town, taking pictures of signs that had “Banks” on them, including schools, city offices, and a local market. We got a bottle of water and some honey-roasted peanuts at the market and took OR 47 south, toward McMinnville, to avoid getting on the interstate highway again.

Once we reached McMinnville, we turned onto OR 99W and continued south. Just after making the turn, we pulled into Leanne’s Coffee to get a blended Mexican mocha, which turned out to be quite delicious.

We continued down OR99W through Amity, Rickreall, and Monmouth, and then Nancy took over driving through Corvallis, Monroe, and Junction City. I took over again and we arrived back home about 6 p.m.

Our dinner consisted of Nancy’s leftover chicken and dumplings, then we turned on the TV to do some streaming.

We started with the second half of the final episode of the current series of “The Marlow Murder Club” on PBS. Then we tried out an Australian police drama, “High Country,” on Hulu. We enjoyed it and we look forward to the remaining seven episodes.

I was monitoring the Flickr account while we streamed, and suddenly I received a notice that one of the old images I uploaded yesterday had been added to today’s Explore page. It is the eighth one to win the honor since the first one happened in May.

Last night while I was awake, however, I came across an app for Flickr that displayed images that had been “explored.” When I ran it on my account, it revealed that ten other images had been on the Explore page from 2005 to 2007. Obviously, it was not quite the same thing in those days, evident by the fact that nothing of the sort occurred from 2007 to 2025. It did, nevertheless, bring me some joy.

Tomorrow will bring some rain, perhaps, later in the day. The overnight low will be 58 degrees, and the high will only get to 72. Before the rain, the day is expected to be cloudy. We will be happy to get some rain, and so will some of the bodies of water in the area that have been running low of late.

The only thing on either of our calendars for tomorrow is my men’s recovery Zoom group at 5 p.m. If, of course, nothing occurs that requires it to be cancelled once again.
