On to the next bind I’ve been sitting on for like. A month.

You might recall that I met up with fandom friends in July and asked them all what they wanted binds of, and mostly they picked a fic of mine 🙃

However, delightful friend @chronicwhimsy also asked for a bind of Maldoror-chant’s fic Beautiful Symmetries, that I was unfortunately not able to complete before the trip. So it took a (slooooooow) journey over the Atlantic and then a much faster trip to her hands.

The Bookcloth is from Hollander’s (I am a loyal customer okay!!) Allure line in Skylight, and the endpapers are a hand-printed Chiyogami. The cover was done with gold iron-on foil and a blue chameleon HTV, and the art inside is all from Affinity stock vectors. (The colors/design have essentially nothing to do with the story, I just thought they were pretty. Well, aside from the obvious dragon tie-in.)

This was a nice, quick little bind that turned out super cute - I really liked changing the chapter spread to start on the left with drop caps on the right.

And (not pictured) I was able to sort the page wrinkles out by sliding clean, dry paper between every 2-3 pages and pressing it overnight - I thought I was pulling my threads too tight but I think it was actually moisture from not being totally dry post-press. So if you’re also having page wrinkles, give that a shot!

I reread wonderful ff by Maldoror_Chant, to be honest I reread it MULTIPLE times, maybe a hundred? XDD Since 2006 it's my favourite Naruto text.

Design inspirations for my binding of

Diplomatic Relations by maldoror_chant

For this one I started out drawing inspiriation for the colour scheme from the two main protagonists and ended up using quite a bit more.  I had the red leather in mind first as it’s close to how Gaara’s hair is shown mostly and decided for the tsumugi for covering for purely aesthetic reasons. Only later I noticed it’s actually a good fit with the rest of Gaara’s colours. The inlay had been planned pretty early on with the kanji in mind too. I wanted to use sand veneer as it’s closer to the whole desert setting and with Gaara manipulating sand, but turned out the sand veneer was too thick and I also liked slate veneer colours better (it’s actually translucent too). The first idea had been to have it visible of both sides of the front cover. So if you opened the book the paste down side of the cover would show the backside of the cut out. Sadly, I could not figure a way to make it look good on both sides. Partly because the fiberglas carrier layer is not that awesome to look at.   (Here’s a picture with the veneer on a white surface and held against the light I do like the effect, but as I said, I couldn’t figure a way to make it work, perhaps another time... ) 

The headbands are inspired by Rock Lee’s colours. I wanted to include him somehow in the design although his taste in colour combinations is....  questionable (but they do make a high-contrast headband).

Last addition to the design was Shukaku’s eye on the spine in favour of a tooled title. Most of the time it’s depicted as a bright dot in the racoon/ tanuki mask of the Tailed-Beast, but there are a few pictures where the pupils are shown.

So for Valentines Day, I present this ironic beast for the fandom that’s 11k of words. This wonderful piece is a gift for the amazing Maldoror_Chant! Their fanfiction “Diplomatic Relations” is an absolute fav of mine. It is original and has quite a few twists that i always enjoy rereading :3

Summary: The Chunin Exam woke something deep inside of Gaara during his fight with Rock Lee. It isn't Love, it can never be Love. But it's deep, arching and twisting. Something carnal.
