The track also featuring Bill Orcutt
It's a sonic experimental guitar heaven
From Larum, the woodwind and electronics duo of Chet Doxas and Puremagnetik founder and chief Micah Frank, the recording is the group’s latest installment in their ongoing exploration of the timeless qualities and contemporary possibilities found in the work of Medieval abbess, theologian, mystic, and composer Hildegard von Bingen. The Music of Hildegard von Bingen, Part Two will be available April 11th, the follow up to 2022’s The Music of Hildegard von Bingen which featured the stand out “Ave Maria” collaboration with Mary Lattimore.
What Frank and Doxas are getting at, and what connects contemporary synthesizers and woodwind instruments to a 12th century composer, is that things like counterpoint and the Medieval cantus firmus, a repeated phrase that is a bed for further musical exploration, may have ancient origins but are as musically useful and relevant as recording tape and Puremagnetik’s music software tools. Larum aren’t reinterpreting on Bingen, they’re using her ideas and techniques to create new music, and to show that her work is timeless. Larum’s takę on Hildegard von Bingen’s music intertwines musique concrète, dub, field recordings, and free jazz, creating an ambitious, forward-looking sonic narrative.
For the new single “O Virga Mediatrix,” Larum taps the distinct guitar stylings of Bill Orcutt, best known for the seminal no wave/punk/free jazz outfit Harry Pussy. Orcutt’s driving, crunchy attack adds more than color to the first single—with Frank’s enveloping sonic bed, and Doxas’ gentle winds, Orcutt seems to be calling out from the deep past, demanding attention.
