The first beta build of the Between Lines app is now available to download from processzine.org.

An audiovisual tool for recursive translation — sound → subtitles → image → sound. At its core sits the .srt file: a liminal caption format that slips between signal and misrecognition, mirroring deafness, auditory processing disorder, and the ambiguities of communication.

This is a fragile, unfinished, glitch-ready beta — built for Intel Macs only. Expect crashes, odd behaviours, unexpected artefacts. But that’s the point: misinterpretation is part of the process.

“Researchers created the piece of music by scanning a picture from left to right, pixel by pixel, and looking at brightness and colour information and combining them with terrain elevation. They used algorithms to assign each element a specific pitch and melody. The quiet, slow harmonies are a consequence of the dark background and the brighter, higher pitched sounds towards the middle of the piece are created by the sonification of the bright sun disk.”

L’image sonification aiuta chi ha problemi di udito… non è la musichetta dell’alba su Marte

Partiamo dall’ovvio. Che suono ha l’alba su Marte? Non quello del video qui sotto.

Alcuni ricercatori si sono divertiti a ‘musicare’, senza alcun reale criterio scientifico, a fare “image sonification”, ovvero a ricavare da 5.000 foto di albe marziane mandate dal rover Opportunity una musichetta. Quella che sentite nel video.
