Sparky Clarkson pulled together a really diverse range of game critics (including myself) to put together a really interesting list of some of 2012's best games. Rather than arbitrarily ranking them, each game has a few paragraphs about why that game was special to that writer. The results are some really interesting retrospections.

One major game site (which scored the game a 4 out of 10) complained the puzzles “are about process, not challenge, so there’s no sense of reward for what you accomplish.” I can only assume this writer has a very different notion of “process” and “reward” than me. In Papo & Yo, the process is the reward. After 30 years of evolution, must we limit our appreciation of games to the utility of their feedback loops?

This article profiles a game designer who I hugely admire by the name of Jonathan Blow.  Blow is famous for creating the radically brain-opening video game "Braid".  Michael Abbott, a stellar writer on video games, defends Blow and deconstructs what it means to be an "artist" in the most passionate of definitions.  I can't help but feel the thrill in my soul that one day, in the domains of writing and photography, I want to be like Blow.

Play Portal for Homework!

At Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana, there is a mandatory class you have to take called "Enduring Questions" if you're a freshman. The syllabus includes Gilgamesh, Aristotle, Goffman, Donne, and Portal. The class is taught by Michael Abbott aka The Brainy Gamer.

Here's a little piece from Giant Bomb written by Patrick Klepek:

"When it came time to talk about the experience, there were surprising responses. Who didn't want to know the fate of Chell at the end of Portal, before we knew she was dragged away? As it turns out, a number of Abbott's students never managed to figure out they were playing as a defined character. They never discovered Chell, so when it came time to talk about their own feelings playing the game, it varied. Some identified as Chell, hoping to escape this bizarre, sadistic facility. Others figured they were escaping. The breakdown was roughly one-third identifying as Chell, the rest never bonding with the character."
