Hibberd and Hocking Sign On With Bombers
It’s encouraging to hear some good news coming out of Tullamarine for a change after the Essendon Football club has confirmed that both Michael Hibberd and Heath Hocking have inked new deals to stay with the club.
Hocking is the latest to remove himself from the up coming free agent list at seasons end by signing on for another two years while Hibberd will remain with the Bombers until the end of the 2017 season.
Much has been spoken about in regard to Bombers players potentially wanting out of the club in the wake of the “supplements scandal” that has been making headlines since February last year. However, 23 players have now re-signed with the club since the story broke and is a sign of faith and solidarity within the walls of the club.
“Inside the doors here nothing has scared us away from signing,” Hibberd said.
“No one is running away from this footy club. We all love being here, we all love the players and we love playing for the club.
“Hopefully we all stick together and build something special.”
“We were disappointed we didn’t play finals last year but I think we have put that behind us,” he said.
“I think if we get a final or two or even further, I think the confidence going into preseason in 2015 will just be massive.”
When asked about the quality of the Bombers list Hocking said: “I think we can push those top four sides in the next couple of years.
“We’re building something. We brought in Brendon Goddard, he has lifted our standards with the way he prepares and the way we can play football is really exciting and I reckon we are pushing up.
“I’ve been here for almost a decade and it has finally seen some good signs in terms of coming towards hopefully a finals or premiership birth.”
Michael Hibberd joined the Bombers as a mature-age recruit from the Frankston Dolphins and has since played 57 games in Essendon colours.
Hocking, 26 and with 109 games under his belt, said he was enjoying playing both in attack and in defence this year after predominantly being used in a midfield, run role over seasons gone by.
“I think we’ve got a fantastic list with heaps of depth and we probably haven’t played to our potential in a complete season but it’s coming,” he said.
On suspended coach James Hird’s scheduled return in two months, Hibberd said: “Hirdy will be back at the end of the year, but at the moment (Mark Thompson) is the coach. When Hirdy gets here we will work with him and take it as it comes.”
