Till the end of days my sister will always gloat and say 'I told you so!' whenever this movie comes up. For the longest time I didn't want to see this because it didn't hold my interest. It's got a great cast on the surface but the plot seems ultimately predictable. Why these three men can't just leave their job and abusive bosses seemed weird. But I finally bit the bullet and agreed to see this with my sis a few years after it came out in theaters. While it isn't the most perfect of comedies I was surprised on how much I enjoyed this.
I think a lot has to do with the cast which, as I already mentioned, is filled with great performances. On the one end we got Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day doing what they do best with the former being a smug asshole & the latter being....well Charlie Day. (I'm not a fan of Jason Bateman in any form but he does a decent enough job as the straight man here.) On the other side you have the bosses and this movie is blessed with Kevin Spacey, Colin Farrell, and Jennifer Aniston. Kevin Spacey is great at being an angry dick so he's playing type. Colin Ferrel is out there as a balding, fat man and his karate is absolutely hilarious. Finally, as a man not a fan of her work outside of Friends, Jennifer Aniston almost steals the movie as an uber-sexual dentist. Seriously if her and Day did another movie together I'd love to see it.
After seeing the film I still have to say the premise is stretched a bit too thin. There are motivations on why these guys can't quit but most are flimsy at best. Also, Jamie Foxx really doesn't bring much in his role and honestly anyone could have done the character cause he serves little purpose. The only other question I have to ask is this: Why on Earth would Julie Bowen's marry such an incredible asshole with Spacey? No comedies are perfect though these days and, again, Horrible Bosses surprised me enough to really enjoy it. If only my sis could now stop rubbing it in...
