"The Adventures of Pete & Pete" -- arguably the best live-action series aimed at kids. Under all the zaniness, everything was disarmingly real and genuine. The kids had their personal fascinations with things like favorite songs on the radio, child-totems like merit badges and action figures, and even the unorthodox adults in their lives. It was filmed in suburban New Jersey -- right in the same neck of the woods where "Strangers With Candy" was lensed, I believe -- with actual homes, streets, and schools, not beach-adjacent performing arts schools, urban townhouses, and soundstage-sized lofts. No one would claim that any of the young cast members were the sort of assembly-line child star/products that Disney and Nickelodeon regularly crank out by the case. I don't think it could be made today. You can hear the network execs: "Too ethnic. Not hot. Where's the synergy?"
“Hi, my name is Pete and I’m a trained killer.”

How could I blow it? I had a car. I had a date. I had... the world.
“To celebrate this wobble in the time warp, Pete and I always spend that legendary hour doing something, well... legendary.”
As for me, I was content to spend the rest of the summer on our cool basement floor. It wasn’t exactly thrillsville, but at least I wasn’t outside.
