How to prepare for a local jam (with no experience)
I didn't go to a funk jam last weekend, but these tips still would have helped:
Check out the jam and see if there's a song list. If there's a song list, grab it.
If you don't see one, ask for the song list.
If you don't want to do that or they don't have a song list, listen and write them down.
Learn two of songs, not one, not ten. (If you learn only one, they might play it before you get there.)
Learn them with barre chords, not open chords.
In addition to the main part (chords), you need to have at least one rhythmic part and one secondary part to lock in with the band, a harmonic part.
When it comes time to take a solo. What do you do? Learn the melody, the vocal melody, of the song that you're playing -- even if you can't get it note for note. Play the melody of the song like the singer was singing or some variation of it.

Since I played in a band during the first fifteen years of…
