Summary: John – a simple name for a simple man – isn’t averse to a challenge or a threat. Each day brings one after another after another… but tonight, he reaches for a door handle instead of a fight. Life is nothing but a war filled with battles of will and choice. As much as cowering to Kahil frustrates him yet again, in the long run he will be the victor.

Dimly lit, overly shadowed halls, even those that are supposed to offer safety, hold risks for those who enter unprepared. Safety. A sarcastic huff flutters past dry, cracked lips of a man whose faith in pretty little lies died long ago. Safety is nothing but an illusion, a dreamt of place of butterflies and unicorns, of laughter bubbling without provocation, of never having to worry about anything ever again…
A movement at the end of the hall catches his attention; Kahlil standing guard at the top of the south stairwell, eyes bleary and looking like he won’t last another minute let alone the rest of his shift. It’s an act, of course. One at which all leaders within the Reds must excel in order to keep the rest in line.
Iron fist in a velvet glove. Keep the troops in line so they won’t mutiny.
As their eyes connect, his lips pull back in a scowling sneer. A handful of others fill the hall, barely conscious and hoping to pass the night in oblivion; coherent enough to recognize trouble when it brews. They scramble to pull themselves out of the way as tension vibrates thickly between narrow walls, unease rampant in its wake.
Sharp, blue eyes focus on Leena’s watchdog as he straightens, eyes instantly clearing; all signs of weakness gone as he takes a menacing step closer. It’s a confrontation eighteen years in the making…
