I saw someone on r/boxing bring up that a point I've talked about before but combat sports is mean. You often don't get many chances to correct a narrative about yourself, even if your accomplishments are widely available.
Spinks is most known for getting knocked out by Mike Tyson in like 93 seconds. This is a thing that is just going to be true forever to the general public. But Michael Spinks is an all time great fighter. He's one of the best handful of light heavyweights to ever fight and is an Olympic gold medalist. He was the undisputed champion of the division. Hell, he was even a legit heavyweight champion handing Larry Holmes his first couple of losses. But you don't get to choose how you are remembered. All we can do is try to spread the word on how good some of these guys actually were.
