The orange and blue food stamp program was the first federal food assistance initiative (1939–1943) designed to aid low-income families while managing agricultural surpluses. Participants purchased orange stamps for normal food expenses and received free blue stamps for buying government-deemed surplus items like butter, eggs, or fruit.

Ralph Waldo Ellison (March 1, 1913– April 16, 1994) was an American writer, literary critic, and scholar best known for his novel Invisible Man, which won the National Book Award in 1953.
Ellison wrote Shadow and Act (1964), a collection of political, social, and critical essays, and Going to the Territory (1986). The New York Times dubbed him "among the gods of America's literary Parnassus".
A posthumous novel, Juneteenth, was published after being assembled from voluminous notes Ellison left upon his death.
Sally Hemings, whose given name may have been Sarah, (c. 1773 – 1835) was an enslaved woman, inherited among many others by the third President of the United States Thomas Jefferson, from his father-in-law, John Wayles. Her mother was Elizabeth "Betty" Hemings. Her father was John Wayles, the enslaver of Elizabeth Hemings who owned her from the time of her birth. Wayles was also the father of Jefferson's wife, Martha Wayles, making Hemings the half-sister to Jefferson's.
