Michael Surrey’s Timon and Tony Bancroft’s Pumbaa appreciation post
Michael Surrey’s Timon drawings will always remain the visual blueprint of the character for me. He has this way of drawing “comic relief” characters that doesn’t TREAT them like comic relief, but as fully fleshed-out beings in their own right. He treats them like PEOPLE (well, meerkats, in Timon’s case.) He somehow gives Timon this weirdly elegant elasticity that’s simultaneously full of mischief, comedic timing, and emotional nuance. Not to disparage the incredible work of other animators, but I feel like every iteration of Timon that came afterwards didn’t quite live up to the vitality and spark that Surrey brought to the character. (And I am including my OWN way of drawing him in that. I can’t live up to Mike’s drawings either.) Frankly, I don’t know how he did it, but I’m gonna be studying him for a long, LONG time.
Just LOOK at these delicious drawings:
I LOVE the strong sense of anatomy that he gave to the character, particular in his limbs and torso! He doesn’t ever let Timon get too noodly or stubby, and I really appreciate that. These are the gold standard for Timon, in my humble opinion.

Hey!
Just wondering: where did you find those gifs about Michael Surrey's work on Ray?
Since he's my favorite Disney Character, I wanna check if there's more concept art or pencil tests about him.
Thank you! ^^

What’s next in our hand-drawn animators list?
Michael Surrey, the supervising animator of Timon in The Lion King (1994 film) & Terk in Tarzan (1999 film). Sometime later this year, he will leave DreamWorks Animation in Glendale, California & move to Duncan Studio in Pasadena, California to do hand-drawn animation projects for Warner Bros. Entertainment, including animating characters from Tiny Toon Adventures such Buster & Babs Bunny (no relation). However, he’ll be working from home first due to the coronavirus. Whenever the software should be Toon Boom Harmony or Adobe Animate (formerly Adobe Flash), 2D animation will never die next year.
