There's always talk about how Kalim is the white sheep of NRC (or one of them, if you count Silver and Rook) and Jamil's story wouldn't work without him, but do you think that Kalim being at NRC is a subtle way of acknowledging that the Sultan is technically an antagonist in Aladdin? (Defining 'antagonist' here as 'someone who is in the way of the heroes goals' since Aladdin and Jasmine can't get married unless Aladdin is a Prince, Jasmine decides to give up being a Princess to be with him or the Sultan changes the law.)

While I do think that the Sultan could be viewed as an antagonist to Aladdin and Jasmine's relationship, I don't think this was the intention of including Kalim as a student at NRC.

Firstly, the Sultan very quickly changes his tune at the end of the film and even begins supporting the relationship very early on. Even though his support is under the false pretense of Aladdin being a prince, I also believe the Sultan wanted his daughter to be happy, and Prince Ali just happened to be a "prince" that checked off that box too. It's not so much the Sultan's fault as it is the fault of traditions.

Secondly, implying that the Sultan was an antagonist to the protags (Aladdin and Jasmine) also implies that the other two members of the Light Magic Trio are antagonists Silto their films' respective protagonists. I think an argument could be made for the Huntsman, since he was originally ordered to kill Snow White. However, I cannot see this being the case for Aurora and/or Phillip somehow being antagonists to... I guess to breaking the curse???

Jafar was a promising young man who had magical abilities but was hidden away in the poor streets of Agrabah, this all changed when the sultan himself discovers Jafar’s magical powers and wanted to flourish them more. Everything started to look up for Jafar now moving into the palace and practicing his magic… until he comes across princess Jasmine and her fiancé Ali plotting together to kill the sultan and take over the kingdom.

Jafar has to warn the sultan but would anyone believe him… what is he to do?
