I’ve come to believe that the effort to make something beautiful...—is the only thing that can prevent us from falling into darkness.

A critic might argue that I suffer from a coward’s nostalgia, but haven’t most battles, aren’t most just causes centered on the belief that all people have the right to pursue a simple dignity for themselves? And doesn’t that simple dignity begin with honoring that small, strange creature inside us—protecting it from scorn—that being who is moved and hopes to move others because of the way the electric lights are refracted by the evening rain—in spite of what has happened? What will happen? One must preserve whatever it is within them that allows them to experience the sublime. This is not a naive position. After many years of “living among the breakage” I’ve come to believe that the effort to make something beautiful—and only the most sincere effort, unaffected by potential outcome, material gain or loss—is the only thing that can prevent us from falling into darkness.
