I had the best day with Michael today. I always learn so much about cell phones and technology when we talk. But I also learn new meanings to old words. "People are sleeping on me (or on that car..)" means people are overlooking something- not paying attention to something. "Nasty" means good. "Bad" means bad. "Disgusting" can mean awesome or what you would say when dissecting a frog. "Those shoes are disgusting" means you like the shoes. "This Frog is disgusting" means it's gross. Today I taught the birthing class for pregnant women living with HIV and we had women from three countries in Africa, a country in south east Asia and the US! It was a great class. One of the women brought me Ethiopian food which was amazing. I brought some home to my kids and it occurred to me that 11 years ago today we brought Michael and Yabsera home to meet their brother and sisters and many friends. I love these photos of everyone waiting at the airport and then we appear with the new siblings. And no one knows just how exhausted we are. (Except my friend Barb. I miss Barb so much.) It's fun to really look at the faces in these pictures. There is so much love that's going to happen in the next 11 years. Way more than one can even imagine. My patient wanted to feed my Ethiopian children. Because food is love in Ethiopia. Mark and I are so incredibly proud of our beautiful son as he graduates from middle school and becomes a high schooler. He will attend East High next year. I wish his grandpa Ato Ashango in Ethiopia could have seen him walk across the stage last Thursday. Most of the world has no idea how far this guy has come. Every year, ever since I can remember, my dad always makes the whipped cream. From scratch. Every year he brings his own cream and vanilla. He used to bring a hand cranked beater, but we have since convinced him that it cuts like 2 hours off the whipping time to use an electric beater. He always makes us do the taste test. We discuss why you do not want to add sugar. We always need "More Vanilla!" And while whipping at some point we all freak out that it's "going to turn to butter if you don't stop!!" (It never has, ever, turned to butter...) This year we added a little music to traditional Whipping of the Cream!
