{Fair warning: this is very long and lacks capitalization and probably doesn't make much sense, i just rambled about thoughts and stuff. proceed at your own risk.}

i think the one of the reasons i love the shows and movies and books that i do so much is because i continually get the same message from them

keep fighting, because there are things worth fighting for

whether that's fighting to defeat the dark lord and save the wizarding world or saving planets and slaying vampires or fighting your day to day demons.

and you can also translate all those grand things the heroes we know and love fight for in their stories to the real world. we fight against oppression and apathy. we fight for liberation and the destruction of (more human) evils.

it's like this neil gaiman quote i really love (i didn't know it was him until i looked up tbh oops): 

“Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.”

but the point is that fiction and fantasy can be so important because they're metaphors. we can apply whatever it is being fought against to our own struggles, personal or political or whatever. and we can use that as strength because we know harry potter can defeat voldemort and buffy can defeat the master and sam and dean can defeat lucifer and the doctor can defeat the daleks (over and over and over again) and so we can defeat our demons too. we can keep fighting. we can go down swinging.

because we have something worth fighting for.

angel said it, and harry said it and someone in everyone of all of my favorite shows and movies and books has said something to that effect, or done something to demonstrate it.

whether it's love or friends or family or hope there is something.

and i think this translates on a wider scale to the message that

the human race is worth saving, despite the fact that it continually destroys itself

anya says something to this effect in s7 of buffy. andy asks her why she's stayed in sunnydale despite the imminent apocalypse and she says that she admires how humans fight even when it's the most moronic thing to do because they're probably going to die anyway. but they still they do. 'go down swinging'.

because humans are beautiful and brutal and terrible and wonderful. the book thief has this message. the multiplicity of human beings and humanity as a whole. we love, we destroy, we create, we hate.

and doctor who does too.

the doctor marvels at humans, loves them so much. their ingenuity and curiosity and hope against hope and every god damn wonderful human being.

but he's seen their brutality too. he's seen the monsters humans are.

but he knows what they can be. and that they're worth it.

some of my favorite quotes in regards to this idea are from fahrenheit 451:

“That's the wonderful thing about man; he never gets so discouraged or disgusted that he gives up doing it all over again, because he knows very well it is important and worth the doing.” 

“There was a silly damn bird called a phoenix back before Christ, every few hundred years he built a pyre and burnt himself up. He must have been the first cousin to Man. But every time he burnt himself up he sprang out of the ashes, he got himself born all over again. And it looks like we're doing the same thing, over and over, but we've got one damn thing the phoenix never had. We know the damn silly thing we just did. We know all the damn silly things we've done for a thousand years and as long as we know that and always have it around where we can see it, someday we'll stop making the goddamn funeral pyres and jumping in the middle of them. We pick up a few more people that remember every generation.” 

so ok one of the remarkable things about humans is the way they rebuild after disaster. we destroy ourselves or get destroyed but we rebuild. and like he said if people remember one day maybe we can stop destroying ourselves. as long as we keep rebuilding. 

as long as we keep fighting.

because it is important and we are worth fighting for.

(and all of these ideas are all tangled up inside each other for me and i don't know if this made any sense, but i think they're why i love the things i do so much and why they're so important to me.)

yep for sure! c: i probably won't reblog it to this blog until the actual due date just so i can do them all in one long go, but yeah you can definitely post them for me before then!

bath

Cas has never had a bath before.  In a fit of romanticism Dean drew it for him, put a few candles around the edge.  No smelly salts or anything of course, that would be just a bit TOO much.  But he really enjoys giving Cas new things to try.  

And of course, after he lets him stew for a little while Dean gets in with him and shows him the joys of bathing one another.  How warm and connected you can feel while someone you love and trust takes a cloth full of soap to the long lines of your skin, caring for you, rinsing you clean of everything the world tries to burden you with.
