Michi meta (Michi is Mai's mother)
One of the interesting things in Return to Omashu is that you get a real sense that Michi is generally a very sentimental woman. She's super sentimental when the "pentapox outbreak" happens and goes "this is terrible" and "how awful" even though it's "only" Earth Kingdom people being infected, she's extremely broken up (far more than her husband or daughter) when Tom-Tom goes missing, she's extremely overjoyed when Tom-Tom returns. All of this is understandable and OK, of course.
However, the really interesting thing is that Michi seems sentimental toward everything and everyone except her daughter. Mai gets her feelings dismissed, while Michi gushes over everything else.
