I feel Ursa wasn't actually the original person Ozai was supposed to be with. Azulon had to switch it because Ozai and Michi were having issues with their kids dying early or just miscarrying and Ozai and Michi were losing their patience when Azulon kept trying to get them to do it again for the tenth time.

Ozai didn't understand wtf was going on as a kid, he just wanted cake. Michi sort of did, but her idea of marriage was something out of a kid's book. They literally didn't get it, even after being told they'd have a baby later on, Ozai legit thought it was like how they played with dolls...

Ursa was celebrating her wedding in Hira'a, when an assassination squad - the Deadly Viper-Bats - disrupts the ceremony, massacring everyone in attendance. The Deadly Viper-Bats gaze upon the severely wounded bride, just before Ozai himself approaches.

I originally didn't know who to put as the role of Ozai's new lover, but I ultimately deemed June as more fitting than any of the other (named) women in the series in Ozai's age group

I was actually tempted to put Zhao in the role of Elle, but since Bill's brother in the movies was already considered "the only man [Bill] has ever loved", I couldn't resist. Yes, Iroh also exists in this AU, and, no, Zhao isn't even Ozai's real brother. This is very intentional.

What do you think about Smoke and Shadow and Ashes of the Academy portraying Michi as a loving mother in both the past and present? I thought the show was pretty clear that at best she was complicit in Ukano's emotional neglect and abuse of Mai. I understand that your husband essentially choosing terrorism over your family would spur a change of priorities in anyone, even a noted social climber like Michi, but it's jarring imo since we never have anyone in-universe note the change.

I think it's bad writing, and it's one of the many symptoms of Yang's poor understanding of the source material and poor understanding of minor characters in particular (Ursa got the same treatment). What makes it worse is that the fandom already minimizes Mai's abuse and mistreatment, and this just gives them further room to do that(to the extent that people take the characterizations in the Yang comics seriously).

My theory is that Yang was trying to make Maiko less controversial by making Mai more of a normie. So now, instead of being from an emotionally distant family, she's now from an emotionally healthy one (with a bad dad). Instead of having a strained relationship with her younger brother, she's now his second mother.

Instead of being rich and classist, she's now working class with a regular job.

Instead of being stoic and unemotional, she's now so brimming with emotions that she cries while breaking up with a guy that she never even liked in the first place.

It's not going to work. Those that are already fervently anti-Maiko are not going to suddenly come on board because of comics that were written decades after the original show. I'm grateful to Faith Hicks for keeping Mai's character pretty much the same. That being said, though, there is only so much she can do when she has to follow up on the Yang comics, so the Michi retcons stay. It doesn't matter that much compared to the larger thematic issues (that were also butchered), but it is symptomatic of a wider problem.
