Nothing. straight fiberglass resin is used either way, but when you use fiberglass mat along with it it ads an extra layer of fiberglass.

Just straight fiberglass, or fiberglass+mat? It's really straightforward to use, you put the catalyst in the resin and you paint it on and wait for it to cure, then do it again if you need to.
