Recent Work: In the Studio With Marcella Kriebel
One of the greatest pleasures of my job is getting to photograph people do what they love. Recently I had the pleasure of photographing artist Marcella Kriebel's latest work for her website and other social media needs. Marcella makes the most beautiful cards, paintings and illustrations that you can often find at a local farmer's market or trade show around town.
Marcella also has a book coming out this month, titled Mi Comida Latina. I couldn't be more excited for her and all that she has planned for this year. If you see her at a local market stop by to say hello and take a peek at her gorgeous drawings.
Last summer, knee deep: when most surfaces in my studio were covered in new illustrated recipes for the cookbook. Some finished, others yet to be colored and stacks to be scanned. Eight months has passed since this shot was taken and now the cookbook will be available in a few short weeks.
beginnings continue
It is less than one month before my book, Mi Comida Latina releases to a nationwide marketplace. The book comes out April 21st, and I’ve begun to book events locally in Washington, DC including book signings at Kramer Books, April 28 and Dupont Farmers Market and a release celebration at Union Market, May 3rd.
I feel like I’m in a good place with this ongoing illustrated cookbook project. I feel confident in the book, excited about 40 new pages and it’s brand new cover. I understand how to share it with the world and my potential to promote my cookbook, as I’ve been doing it for the self published edition over the last two years.
The book is now in it’s third edition, and I swear, could not have dreamed up how I went from losing a fulfilling job to a becoming a published cookbook author.
I will say right away, that I am not a professionally trained chef, and that do not I consider myself a writer, really. I’d always favor painting a picture, sharing a photo or verbally recounting my life experience over writing my experience down. I’ve realized however, that my story about this illustrated cookbook is getting long, and it’s best summarized through a written narrative. Plus, the series of events is too good not to share from start to finish. So stay tuned- future posts will illuminate my illustrated cookbook story: how a hand lettered illustrated recipe book came to fruition.
