This micro apt. trend is getting out of control. Here’s a $680 mo. rental in Vancouver, Canada, advertised as a “micro studio.” It’s actually a bathroom with a bed.
The 160-square-foot (15 sq. meters) apt. posted an ad on Craigslist to the shock of many. The successful applicant would find himself in a space with, according to the listing, granite counters, storage space, a hot plate, a bed, a mini fridge, large window and new porcelain flooring. (Not to mention another porcelain feature – the toilet – which is in full view of the bed.)
The Craigslist ad read: ‘This unit is ideal for a single individual looking to live downtown at an affordable rate, and who does not need much space.’ Those who like to view the glass as half full, would also be happy to know that there is laundry in the building and street parking available.
According to a survey by commercial real estate firm CBRE, Vancouver is the 7th most expensive housing market globally, coming ahead of Los Angeles, Paris, and New York. So getting your hands on a pad that’s less than the city’s average of $900 with hot water and electricity included might look like a win. (A similar matchbox-sized space in London with a bed next to the kitchen was listed for rent at $1119 a month.)
Is that the mini fridge in the wall, on the left? This is even worse than that place in Newark I posted.

After posting that new micro apt. in Jersey City, NJ, I’m fascinated by micro apts. This is Anthony’s 150sqft. apt in a New York City brownstone.
I just came across Nest, a micro-apt. in Jersey City, New Jersey. They come furnished and rents start at $1,277 mo., although another rental site says they start at $1,374. Yes, Northern NJ rent is ridiculous, b/c it’s just a stone’s throw from New York City- I live here. But, I’m not so sure this is a good deal. What do you think?
Have you seen this? The oldest shopping mall in the US, The Arcade Providence, of Rhode Island has been converted to micro apt.’s.
This is what it looked like 188 yrs. ago. 3 floors of shops.
The top 2 floors have 48 apt’s. and there’s a mall on the bottom floor.
The micro-apartments, range from 225 to 775 sq. ft. (and priced from $800 to $1,800 a month). Most measure 300 square feet or less. They’re fully furnished and tenants only need to show up with 2 suitcases.
Each fully-furnished micro-space includes an elevated full bed over a four-drawer dresser, a small kitchen table, a sofa, a 50″ flat screen TV, and a full bathroom. Larger apartments do not come with a built-in bed.
The kitchens are equipped with a mini-fridge, sink, dishwasher, and microwave — but no ovens or stove tops.
Not only does the central atrium provide filtered light to the units, but it becomes the 'public street' connecting neighbors. On the 1st fl., there’s a common room with a TV & laundry room. On the 2nd fl., there’s storage space to park bikes or keep other belongings that don't fit in the apartments. What do you think?
