But...West Side 2021 had Moreno in it. So Debose had to play Anita against... Anita!

She had to play a character opposite the very woman who played her sixty years before.

Incredible; and a tribute to DeBose’s talent.

“A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” (Elia Kazan’s feature debut) has some of the best rain (and briefly, snow) effects in cinematic history.

Perfect for a scenario about a girl wanting to improve her life after her loving drunk father (“he had no gift for making money, but he had one for giving his heart freely”) dies and her mother turns cold.

It really is up there with the best of Kurosawa. I would be surprised if it didn’t influence him
