If You're a Vegetarian, What are the Options for Omega-3 Fats?
There's no better source of omega-3 fats than krill oil, but what do you do if you are a vegetarian or are allergic to shell fish?
You have several options. Firstly you have micro-algae based DHA omega-3 fatty acids that have been proven to reduce the symptoms of heart disease. (Read more here - http://jn.nutrition.org/content/142/1/99)
You also have flaxseed oil, even flaxseeds but you need to eat a ton of them to get enough omega-3 fats. Walnuts are also high in omega's, but the problem with both of these is that men don't convert them into essential fatty acids very easily, neither are older people.
So, you have other choices like leafy green vegetables and hemp seeds, which are great sources. I've also read about people thinking that they're getting their daily amounts of omega-3's from peanut butter. I don't know who advised these folk on peanut butter and omega-3 fats, but they've got it completely wrong.
Peanut butter is high in omega-6 essential fats, which as the name suggests, are 'essential' for life. But, the body requires more omega-3 EFA's for normal functionality, than it needs 6's. So, bewared of peanuts.
