Once in a Blue Moon l AJ Smadi
The May "Blue Micromoon" rising over Apache Junction
Blue Moon May 31, 2026 â What Youâll REALLY See Through a Telescope
Most people hear âBlue Moonâ and think the Moon will somehow turn blue.
It wonât.
But what will happen on May 31, 2026 is actually far more interesting for skywatchers.
This full Moon is both: ⨠A Blue Moon (the second full Moon in a calendar month) ⨠A Micromoon (the Moon is near its farthest point from Earth)
And through a telescope? The view is incredible.
Youâll be able to see:
đ Tychoâs enormous white ray system spreading across the lunar surface đ The dark maria (âseasâ) including Mare Tranquillitatis â where Apollo 11 landed đłď¸ Giant craters like Copernicus and Aristarchus glowing in sharp contrast đ¸ Stunning full-disk Moon views that are perfect for smartphone photography
One thing most guides never mention:
â ď¸ The full Moon through a telescope is EXTREMELY bright. Without a Moon filter, it can feel like staring into a floodlight.
The guide below explains: ⢠What magnification works best ⢠What binoculars vs telescopes will show ⢠The best time to observe after moonrise ⢠How to photograph the Moon with your phone ⢠Which lunar features to hunt down on May 31
If youâre planning to step outside for this event, this guide will help you see far more than just âa bright Moon.â

Really enjoyed this Blue Micromoon conjunct Antaresâ¨
⧠micromoon magic â§
micromoons occur when the [full] moon is at its farthest point from earth (apogee), making it appear smaller than usual. because of its distance from the earth, the gravitational influence of a micromoon is less than usual, leading to a smaller variation of high and low oceanic tides.
in reference to magic:
because of its size, the micromoon can correspond to magical workings that involve narrowing in on a subject, which could be introspection, reflection, dedication, focus, etc.
its distance from earth, however, insinuates that it could have less influence on our emotions, moods, and other traits that are governed by the moon (ymmv) - for me, it presents the idea that if my mind isn't clouded with emotion that i'm able to more freely rely on logic to make decisions and take action.
micromoon correspondences:
reflection
introspection
productivityÂ
focusÂ
time managementÂ
oh, and if you're into pop culture magic - you can associate micromoons with sailor chibi moon!

If you happen to look up at the sky just after dusk on Sunday, youâll see something that only happens once in a blue moon â literally. Thatâs because the monthâs second full moon, which is known as a blue moon, will be visible then. If you recall, Mayâs full flower moon occurred on May 1 this year, allowing us this monthâs rare BOGO full moon opportunity. We wonât see another calendrical blue moon until December 2028!
Some Tips: While Sunday is the date of the full moon, it will also appear full to the human eye on Saturday night. This moon will be extra special because it's also what astronomers call a "micromoon," which occurs when the moon reaches its farthest point from Earth in its monthly orbit, about 252,000 miles away. Though it will technically appear about 6% smaller than usual, you're unlikely to notice the difference with the naked eye. In fact, since this full moon will hang low in the southern sky, it might actually appear larger than normal due to an optical illusion that makes low-hanging moons look enormous!
Sunday Thoughts
⌠yeah. I know. But thanks for thinking Iâm stupid.
My latest aura photo AND random BIG-style fortune said the same thing. Iâm trying Universe, I swear. đ
Itâs okay to leave the group chat, just so you know.
The full moon last weekend was a micromoon. The moon was at its apogee so it was 14% smaller than a supermoon (at perigee) and 7% smaller than a âregularâ full moon. It looked 30% dimmer as well than a supermoon because itâs so far away (407,000km). đ
We didnât go âthereâ on this trip. The juju is off and we have to follow the vibes. Too bad though. That place has a great coffee shop and bookstore. Good thing a new bookstore and coffee shop combo opened up in Harvard! Plus thereâs a Moleskine store!
I love how halloumi squeaks on your teeth
Gaga is everything. TS could never. Paws up!!
JWST has proven that there is chance 99.7% that there is life on K2-18b
And yeah⌠I know that too but thanks again for thinking Iâm an idiot.
Violette FR Bisou Balm is amazing.đ
