A Little* Background. (*"little" may be defined subjectively)
Well howdy y’all! My name is Kathryn, and I am what some of you might call a bit of “nerd.” And actually, this is the highest praise you can give me, because it is who I am.
First of all, I love science. This might seem completely cliché, but I love how it makes the world make so much sense! I love how attempts to organize the crazy world we live in, and how it empowers people to live better lives. I won’t go on a humanitarian, free-the-children-through-education-rant, but be warned I do believe education is the greatest force for creating positive change in the world.
Now if I had to classify myself within the domain of Nerd, my kingdom would most definitely be Biology and my phylum Microorganisms. Last year (I am currently a sophomore) I took biology, and that was the start of my love affair with Science. I had the most amazing teacher, Ms. Bella Jacobson. She was the most supportive, caring, and all-around nice teacher probably on the face of this Earth. She encouraged me to take the independent science research program at my school, which allowed me to find my class and order of Nerd-dome.
Viruses, viruses, viruses. Vira (is actually a phylum but for the purpose of this analogy) is my class. Stick around my blog and you will definitely hear quite a lot about viruses, and you might actually learn a thing or two. The family Retroviridae is most definitely my order. From Avipoxviruses to Zika viruses, I love them all. I am particularly fascinated with a type of virus known endogenous viruses; stick around to learn more about those.
This year I am taking Chemistry, which never ceases to blow my mind. I am also on the Science Olympiad team, which should be interesting given the team’s complete lack of leadership from the upperclassmen, coupled with the fact that Regionals is next Saturday.
Well that is a basic introduction to my love affair with Science. I hope you will follow me; hopefully I can share some of my irrationally produced endorphins with you!
