What if I said Neil pushes away Aj cus he can’t handle someone like him in his life and when he gains feelings rather reject it then accept it so he pushes Aj out of his life.
Aj heavily misses him not only cus he lost a good friend in his eyes, but also any future he could have had with him as a love interest . Sucking it up and taking it as his own fault.
Neil feels his stomach turn as what he did is correct but is it?? He misses him. His friend. Even as the memory of him fades he can’t forget the impact he has on him. Not to mention Aj sees Neil in everything. Hoping Neil will just , come back to forgive him . For whatever he did ..

For happiness reasons they see eachother in the halls after school and since it’s empty and what not they have a small conversation about how they are. And out of no where Aj turns to him and ask why they can’t be friends like normal??? He misses him :(( he misses his infodumps , his smile, the way he messes with his shirt when he’s talking , bla bla bla more then just he wants company, he wants NEIL!! all of it :(( He wants his friend back . And Neil thinks about all the consequences this could have in a split second, but chooses his friend over all of it. And it’s dumb silly hug
And probably has Neil going okay that’s enough hug and Aj does hehehe okay
