Why did the Drum, with all the experiments, have to be on the top levels where he mostly conducted his business? There was always an off chance of running into something unsavory. Rufus has never liked the science department, even if they gave ShinRa ample money from the exploration of topics that were otherwise over the ethics line.

It seemed one of their little experiments tripped over it. A low guttural growl came from Dark Nation, who lingered beside her master, pausing only when he ceased his steps. This ghostly figure was haunting the halls.

"What are you doing here?" This is a normal question to anyone in this predicament. "… or where did you come from might be the appropriate question." The only access anyone has on these particular floors is by the use of a keycard.

There were a lot of them.

Er, like.... a lot a LOT.

It had partially been the reason why he stumbled upon the chance to defend the unfortunate lady caught in the middle in the first place. While it wasn't terribly unusual to see the rat fiend things gathered in bulk, it WASN'T typical for them to go in for the hunt like they were.

Something SERIOUS was attracting them. And he had a feeling it wasn't some cube of tasty cheese. Unless the lady he witnessed scurrying about was actually a cheese-shaped person.

What he hadn't counted on was a.... well, a heart? Not that he wasn't capable of feeling for the critters or anything, but......... er, holding them off without hurting them was a challenge and a half. And he was a weapon, a sharpened blade!

"Um." He swung his blade first one way, and then the other, his evasive maneuvers so far enough to keep them back - within stepping distance, but not lunging for him. "I got your back!" In whatever way was necessary? He would try to respect her wishes, but he also didn't really favor a bite from one of those things. They SMARTED.

Why were they so MANY of them? Could it be.... the stranger herself??

"It's cop propaganda," he argues, even though he's not even sure the little blue alien can understand him. "We're not watching that shit." And with that, he's on a quest for Rio, because her stupid little Pupu wearing its Mommy's Special Boy t-shirt is apparently strong enough to break his nose.

"Babe! I'm gonna kill this alien!"

The mission abroad in Wutai was arduous, but far from exciting. Angeal was tasked with guiding a payload along a critical supply line deep in enemy territory, which could turn the tide for future battles. After spending weeks fending off guerilla attacks, the supplies safely found their way to their final destination, with his cadre suffering minimal losses. A great success all around, and one that he's happy to have followed by a few days of mandated repose.

The chevalier leans in toward the helicopter's window to get a better look of the sunset illuminating Junon's skyline. The mako canon glints in the last of the evening rays as they circle the perimeter. Eventually, the chopper lands in the middle of the airbase and the passengers begin their streamlined process of debriefing. After some time, the chevalier is free to walk the streets of the port alone and uses his first spare moment to phone his beloved.

Pressing an eager ear to his PHS, he listens as the line rings once before he's forwarded straight to voicemail. Puzzled, he opens his mouth and begins leaving a hasty message. He suddenly stops mid-sentence as his azure hues flicker upward and spy the increasingly familiar silhouette of a woman standing on the far end of the pier. He finds himself blinking several times, suppressing an incredulous gasp with bated breath before allowing himself to hope that she's who he thinks she is. He flips his phone closed and slowly begins to approach the woman to get a better look, feeling his pulse start to quicken with anticipation.

Sephiroth wasn’t an uncompassionate person, despite apperances and general demeanour. Mainly, he was awkward. Social interactions were difficult to navigate, and so he tried to avoid them when he could (his few friends being the only exceptions, of course). Really, normally he would have just kept going, but something about this woman gave him pause. Maybe it was her sorry state, maybe it was the words she had spoken having resonated with him in some way. 

He also had to admit his curiousity when she said that he reminded her of someone. Who could he possibly remind someone of? There was no one else like him. He wasn’t arrogant, not really, it was just a fact. Even among the best that Shinra had to offer, he stood out. A freak among freaks. 

“Who?” he questioned, giving her a rather piercing stare.

Arms crossed over his chest, Sephiroth thought that was almost funny. At least funny enough to elicit a quit huff through his nose. There were so many in this city and beyond who would say the exact opposite.

“What makes you say that?”

"Apparently mine." Demyx says it fairly sharply, a tone so rare for him that he almost doesn't recognize his own voice. "That's my brother. Her child. You'd think she would care a little more about whether or not he's okay. But nooo, she wakes up every morning and chooses violence."

Her words still echo loudly in his head. Her blatant disregard for Roche's life and that cold, stony look in her eye when she angrily hung up the phone on Shinra for daring to bother her with news of her son's near-death. It makes his blood boil, if he's honest, but if he wants to keep a roof over his head, there isn't a whole lot he can do about it.

"And if she's that much of a witch on the outside, I don't even want to know what she's like on the inside."

"For what? That one day I'll wake up, and everyone will have magically forgiven me?"

He scoffs, forcing himself to lay still as her fingers trace the blackened claw marks stretching across his back, a brand connecting him forever to a monster.

A dream, torn to shreds, burned to ash.

Proof that the world isn't made for people who dream.

"I wouldn't even want it."

Seifer can't force himself to sit still any longer-- he slides from beneath her touch, off the side of the bed.

He walks through the world with his head held high anyway, because it's that, or grovel on his knees. And he gets on his knees for no one.

Except Rio, as he hits the soft carpet, hands coming to yank her toward him, to lay his mouth along her stomach, down her hip, drawing apart her knees.

It's easier to distract her, to push past what he doesn't want to talk about, doesn't want to think about, running a hot line of kisses up the inside of one pale thigh, fingers digging deep.

Leaving bruises, leaving marks.

(He isn't the only one who can brand someone, to lay his claim.)
