Thank you for the congratulations and for the prompt request lovely! This is something a little bit different from what I usually write, but it seemed to work out in its own way. I hope you enjoy it!
Lan Wangji knows, without a doubt in his mind, that Wei Ying loves him. Both unconditionally and wholeheartedly. He knows he never has to fear Wei Ying hurting him in any way, nor would his heart ever be broken whilst held in the delicate weight of his hands.
However. It doesn’t mean that there aren’t moments where Lan Wangji feels his own jealousy getting the better of him.
The thing is, Wei Ying remains just as blind to how charming he can be half the time as he had been during his youth. He is filled with the belief that the world still very much hates and fears him based on the false tales told about him, and whilst there are still Cultivators who hold grudges against Wei Ying or who are envious over just how intelligent and able he is, many of the people both he and Lan Wangji meet on their travels together do not carry fear or distrust against him in their hearts.
Truthfully, seeing others love and admire his husband first-hand usually makes Lan Wangji inexplicably happy. Wei Ying always meets such admiration with joyful surprise, and while he takes time to absorb the impact his gentle help leaves on many, Lan Wangji is content to watch with pride as others see the kind of person Wei Ying truly is.
There are, however, times where such appreciation steps over the invisible line of what can be deemed as appropriate. The barrier is broken with a lingering touch upon Wei Ying’s arm that lasts for a stretch too long while a lady shares her gratitude, or it's in the way a man's eyes may follow Wei Ying’s movements a little too closely while Wei Ying paces deep in thought; the other man's focus often quickly fading once the guilty party meets Lan Wangji’s own silent, cold glare pointed upon them.
Wei Ying, of course, is none the wiser to these things happening around him. He continues to brush any overly flattering comments off with a bright laugh, waves his hand at repeated thank you's with a shake of his head, saying that 'no thank you's are necessary! We were happy to help!' He's often too lost in the puzzle of his own thoughts to bear any notice to heated staring contests happening in the same room, nor the way the temperature seems to cool beneath Lan Wangji's icy glare.
Lan Wangji never says anything of the fierce wave of protectiveness that washes over him at these times, nor the bitter sting of jealously he sometimes feels stirring its way deep within the pit of his stomach.
He doesn’t ever need to. For his Wei Ying, as he has always known him to be, is good. He is kind. And although he may be oblivious to the flirtations happening around him, Wei Ying is incredibly intuitive when it comes to understanding the changing moods of his Lan Zhan.
He’ll know when Lan Wangji is upset, commenting on him being quieter than usual. Wei Ying will never pressure Lan Wangji to explain what eats away at his thoughts - the reason hardly matters, not when Wei Ying always seems to know the perfect ways to cheer him up and cause any lingering insecurities he may have to melt away.
It’s in the way he’ll simply talk for the both of them as Lan Wangji falls into silence, sharing one of the numerous, elaborate stories he has from either his own travels or his time with the young disciples.
It’s in the way he’ll press a little closer to Lan Wangji’s side at night. How he’ll wrap his arms a little tighter around him, falling off to sleep with a content grin pressed against the skin of Lan Wangji’s chest, nuzzling against him for both comfort and warmth.
Sometimes, when the irritations have truly gotten deep beneath Lan Wangji’s skin, Wei Ying will remind him of his love for him in the way he’ll give himself over to him, offering everything he is and everything he has, a silent answer which tells Lan Wangji that Wei Ying is his alone, as much as he is Wei Ying’s.
There are times when Lan Wangji doesn’t like sharing Wei Ying with the world.
Because Wei Ying is the best thing he knows, the light which guides him every single day. And Wei Ying deserves to know that he is both loved and appreciated - even by those they only meet in passing.
