Midnight Thief: Livia Blackburne

5.5/10 Stars I finished this book last night, and it wasn’t what I thought it was going to be… Midnight Thief is a novel about a girl named Kyra who has spent her whole life living on the streets and having to steal everything she can. She has an uncanny ability to scale walls (she does her fair share of parkour) and can get in and out of places unseen. When the leader of the Assassins Guild offers a position she decides to go a head and take them up on the their offer; despite what Flick, the boy who is practically her brother, feels about it. In comes Tristam a young and ambition Palace knight who is on a mission after his best friend is killed by a ruthless clan called the Demon Riders who ride wild cats and have no known residence. Tristam puts his plans of following in his father and brothers footsteps on hold to try to take down both the Guild and the Riders. A wrench is constantly being thrown in his plan when a talented thief keeps getting past the Palace defenses without leaving solid evidence of how “he” is getting in.   When several unseen and unusual events throw Kyra and Tristam together they realize that maybe working together (aka forcing her to work with them) would be the best bet for both of them to get what they want. Tristam the vengeance he seeks and Kyra the freedom she deserves. I have very mixed feelings about this book. I both loved and hated it. Livia Blackburne’s writing is so strong and she is amazing at build characters and scenes. I liked how even though Kyra is a “gutter rat” she has worked so hard to still be able to do so much. She wants to be seen as a strong and independent female who doesn’t need any help standing on her own. Livia does an amazing job really having that show through. Tristam is also such a strong character with a lot going for him. I was in no way disappointed in any characters in this novel. The story did start slow and strong, but ended odd. I felt I was either loving or completely hating some scenes. I guess I would say I loved 3/4 of this book and didn’t love the last section. There is a scene in the middle where she’s in the Palace which I completely loved and wished more of the story was like that. BUT this story was just really not what I thought it was going to be. A lot of the story is pretty predictable, even the “twist” that happened I already knew was coming. Personally I didn’t really like the twist… I’ve been so into reading about female assassins lately so I thought this read would easily fit into what I love. Even though it is “about an assassin” it really isn’t (this is where the twist falls in), which left me feeling disappointed. This story had so much going for it but I was ultimately was left wanting more…  I wanted more Tristam and Kyra moments. I really wish that Flick would have been a more active character as well.

Will I continue to read this series? More than likely. Was I super happy with this one? Not really. I do think that the next book in this series will be better, and fingers-crossed that I’m right.
