It makes no more sense to question our misfortune than it does to question our good fortune.
Livia Blackburne, from Rosemarked
4.5 stars
A healer and a warrior, both touched by the plague and survived in different ways, come upon a chance to infiltrate and spy on the enemy. But they might lose themselves in the process.
First off, I didn't know if I would be in the mood for this book since it deals with a plague but it was fine. Rosemarked is a term for one half of the Rose plague survivors, they have rose colored marks and they're highly contagious, and eventually it comes back to kill them. The other half of the survivors are Umbertouched, they have brown markings but they do not carry and they are forever immune to the illness. This is where our characters come in.
Zivah is a rosemarked healer and Dineas is the umbertouched solider. The story splits between the two of them and they're both such fun to be with. I don't want to spoil how they go about infiltrating the enemy but it's really unique. I love that each of them have their little pets too.
The writing isn't as magical as some of the books I've read but it's definitely not boring, and I was drawn in anyways. The book touches on interesting questions like faith, Zivah's healer duty of not harming people but also knowing if she doesn't do something more innocent people will be harmed, Dineas dealing with trauma and identity, and more.
The romance between them is slow and believable, and I'm dying for more! Thank god there's a second book already out, Umbertouched, which I will buy!
I didn't rate it five stars simply because there was no huge wow factor for me but it's a very engrossing story and I'm looking forward to see it end.

“The gods have deserted this place. The hospital is overcrowded, and the conditions are appalling. There aren’t nearly enough caretakers to go around, even with the hired help. If the rosemarked compound is a waiting chamber for the dying, this hospital is its wounded, stuttering heart.”
Camille’s ( @thevajunglebook ) Galetine’s giveaway prize finally arrived at my doorstep, and when I opened this package, I nearly sobbed. I was expecting one book, and she gave me three like the generous angel that she is. Thank you, girl. I can’t wait to read these!
