Contractions - My 3 C Rule
The first C – Contractions - this sensation must last for 60 seconds each and must be strong, taking your breathe away, you may find it difficult to speak through them. These contractions may make you want to stop what you are doing.
The second C - Consistent - these contractions come every 2-3 minutes and are intense. The third C – Continuous - they do not stop, they keep coming with small breaks in between. All the 3 C’s must be happening for you to be progressing further into labour.
Remember your superwoman, contractions will never be your kryptonite. ;)
A little too late
I worked on triage for quite a few weeks and the worst part about this was sending women in early labour home. I know some women may be reading this and think we enjoy sending you ladies home, because we’re just mean. Did you know women admitted to hospital whilst in early labour are more likely to have complications and interventions, including a caesarean section? However, I do feel that these couples had not been properly informed about early labour. Or it could be that when you are thrown into a situation that you have never been in, you really just don’t know how to act. In that particular moment you just forget all logical explanation of everything, let alone your two one hour classes 4 weeks ago on birth preparation. Labour is just one of those situations if unprepared for it, whether you’re an accountant, an analyst or teacher it speaks one language - PAIN. On top of all that, being sent home can be distressing. Women go away without the thing they initially came for - support, safety and reassurance. This shows unfortunately that our birth preparation classes need a little more work. Our classes should focus on encouraging women to attain self-reassurance and most of all, we need to help her listen to her own body. We need to focus on allowing women to trust their bodies. Otherwise we defeat them before they’ve even started. Before sending women home with occasional cramps, teary eyes and disgruntled husbands. I did mange to come up with this - my 3 C Rule - I still couldn't help but feel it was just a little too late.
