Nolan's parents consider a lot of things as far as their dumbass son is concerned but they are also realistic, practical people and it's a tacit agreement that Nolan will try to avoid getting into deep shit so long as he's given the option to get into deep shit. 

Take the option away and he's going to walk straight out the front door and immediately seek out the deepest shit he can find.
