Around Town
When strolling around town in Futami, one thing that might come to mind is ‘why all the frogs?’.
A local working at a near-by museum shared the interpretation he holds true to; what first seemed like an old-man pun is actually a rather romantic point of view. ‘Kaeru’ , the Japanese word for frog, can also mean ‘returning home’ (a homonym). With Futami being an important stop for travellers on pilgrimage, of old many of the visitors in town had come a long way full of danger and hardships to reach their destination. This being said, the road back would be no different. The frog’s part in the story is watching over the people and make sure they return home safely.
