On December 7, 1941, World War II took a dramatic turn.
Since the start of the war in September 1939 FDR had struggled to aid Great Britain. At every stage, he met opposition from Americans who wanted no part in overseas wars.
That changed instantly on December 7 when Japan staged a surprise attack against American military bases in Hawaii, the Philippines, and other locations in the Pacific. Japan was linked with Germany and Italy in the Axis Powers alliance and, four days after the attack, both nations declared war on the United States. In America, opposition to war vanished and the nation became determined, in FDR’s words, “to win through to absolute victory.”
