In isiZulu, there is a powerful saying that goes: ukuhamba, ukubona. It translates to ‘to travel is to see’ in English, a sentiment that I agree with wholeheartedly. One of the greatest proponents of this saying is my paternal grandmother. Her suitcase is always in first gear, ready to move. In 2009, I travelled with her to Maputo as guests to a family friend’s wedding. As we travelled, I was dazzled by the rich, green fauna. I marvelled at the brightly painted houses, the flurry of taxis, the beauty of the people and the white sand of the endless beaches. I watched boys play soccer on a stretch of beach sand that had crept into their village. I came, I saw, I was in awe. Traveling gives you the opportunity to learn new languages, taste unexplored delights and to see a blue sky turn moody grey, before a great storm. Africa’s people, the diaspora and her majestic animals have born the mark of migration throughout history. Beyond borders, beyond the Serengeti and across the sea. Whether migrating for food, as part of a nomadic lifestyle, in pursuit of work and new opportunities, or for love, ours are a people who have been on the move for millennia. Whether you are traveling with fastjet to soak in our sights, to spend time with those close to you or to pursue prosperity in your business deals, we wish you a safe and pleasant journey.
