Mike: You still have to go to bed. Uncle J will be here when you wake up. *sets her down* Go get ready for bed.

Mike: Thanks for helping me take care of her while Katie is gone.

J: No problem. Since she is going to sleep, does that mean we can watch a movie?

Mike: Sure. *makes sure she actually went to sleep before sitting on the couch with J*

J: Halloween?

J's POV

This is a story of how two best friends found out their true feelings for each other.  All because of a simple phrase. I wanted to write this so that the story lives on after we die. I probably will get rid of it though.Don't worry, It wont have a tragic ending or a hallmark ending.

10/29/17

Mike and I were recording another video. I felt off. It was weird, like over night something changed. I wasn't that into the video which sucks because our videos are suppose to be almost interactive with the audience. It just sucked. Maybe I was sick. I just ignored it until I could go back to my house. Apparently, I wasn't hiding it very well. Because the second Mike turned off the goddamn camera he had to ask.

Mike asked, "Hey, dude? You okay?"

"Of course. Why wouldn't I be?" I responded, trying to act like my normal-ish self.

"You were acting weird. You normally always get a lot in the video but this time you didn't say much."

"I'm just a little tired. That's all." I tried comin' up with an excuse. Mike knows me. He knows me more than anyone. This wasn't going to trick him.

"I'll let it go for now but I expect an answer tomorrow. I have to help MJ pick out a costume for Halloween." That was his way of saying bye so I just got in my car and drove away. I'm so stupid. But the minute I got away from his house, I felt normal again. Weird...

Mike forgot about everything. Almost literally. Its like he doesn't know I exist anymore. I don't go to his house like normal. Now that MJ is only a year or two away from dating age, he doesn't have time to talk about movies in front of a camera. I thought I'd try to at least see what he was doing. I knocked on the door twice. No answer. Over the past year, I changed a lot. I still drink and watched movies almost 24/7 but I get more emotional. The fact that no one answered hurt me.

When I was about to walk back to my car, the door opened and Katie was standing there.

"J? Where have you been? Its been weird without you here." She questioned me. Well if you were wondering that then why didn't you go to my house, bitch? My thoughts on Katie were, she is a sweet girl but can be a bitch sometimes.

I decided not to bother them and simply respond with, "Its not important. I'll just leave."

"Wait. I'm gonna get Mike." I tried to stop her but she went into the house anyways. I regretted ever coming in the first place.

"J?" Mike walked outside and just stood in front of me. I froze. I figured out, about a week after I started feeling weird, that I had feelings for my best friend. I hid it as much as I could but I think he caught on. We just started drifting apart and soon stopped talking completely.

"I shouldn't have came here. Sorry." I started walking back to my car again but he stopped me.

"Where have you been?" That's a dumb question and he knows it.

I just respond with, "At my house."

"Alone?" What was I suppose to say. Yes I live alone with my beers and cheap Tv. But I didn't answer and just continued to walk to my car. On the outside I seemed fine. Maybe just irritated. But my brain was freaking out and my heart almost came out of my chest. This was a mistake! This was a mistake! This was a mistake! My brain kept screaming to get out and go home. What else could I do. He has 2 kids and a great life. I can't ruin it. I decided to just leave him alone.

"Dude wait!" I ignored him. "Stop!" Just get home. "J!" Just go to sleep in your bed and when you wake up this will all have been a bad dream. "JONATHAN!" I froze again. Its always the full name that gets you to listen. I want to be more confident but I can't! I don't know what to do! I don't know what he wants me to do! "Why are you leaving?"

That. That broke me. The question with the most obvious fucking answer broke me. Tears started forming. I could feel it. I turned to look him in the eyes. I lost everything already. This wasn't going to change anything. "BECAUSE! YOU HAVE THE PERFECT LIFE WITH THE PERFECT WIFE AND THE PERFECT CHILDREN! AND I DON'T WANT TO RUIN THAT FOR YOU!"

He seemed surprised by my yelling. "Are you drunk?" Are you fucking kidding me?

"No..." He didn't say anything. I took that as a sign. He doesn't care about me leaving or not. He just wanted to know why I bothered to visit in the first place.

"Uncle J!" MJ ran out the door and practically jumped on me. She got so excited to see me. I am convinced, and so is she, that Mike took some of my dna and put it in her.

"Hey MJ. Its been a while."

"Why haven't we seen you here?" She sounds just like Mike with her small southern accent. I just shrugged. I didn't feel like answering that question anymore. "Dad missed you a lot. You two should hang out or something."

I thought for a second, "If your dad wants to. I don't want to bother you guys."

"I think it would be nice. you guys are different without each other." Katie jumped in, standing at the door way.

Mike finally responded, "How about tonight?"

"Alright. I'll come by later." I got into my car and left quickly. What was I thinking...

I stopped by their house. I had to analogize for what I said...

When I went to the door to knock, it was open. I could here MJ and Mike talking.

"Have you ever heard the phrase 'A drunk mans words are a sober mans thoughts'?" MJ questioned.

"No..."

"You have to talk to him."

"I can't."

"Dad."

"No."

I didn't need to hear anymore. I knew how he felt. I couldn't get in the way of his life right now. I'll just go home.

I forgot about it. All of it. I didn't want to make a big deal out of it. That was until I heard a knock on my door. When I opened it, MJ was there. She seemed upset so I let her inside.

"MJ, what happened?"

"Everything at home is wrong! Dad keeps going out at night and mom barley says anything to him when he is there!" I tried to calm her.

"Has he said anything?"

"Last time I actually spoke to him was a few days ago."

"Do you have an idea why he is acting this way?"

"He said you told him something while you were drunk." Of course...

I sighed, "Sorry..." I don't know if she knows what I said but I believe that would be enough to make Mike act like this.

"Can you maybe talk to him?"

"I can't..."

"Can I tell you the truth?..." She asked me. It sounded like she was nervous to tell me.

"Sure..."

"I think dad has lost his feelings for mom."

I hesitated, "...Really?" I didn't want to sound like an asshole. But I still did.

"Do you have feelings for him?" I shook my head no. It was a lie but I didn't want to come in between their family. "You're lying. You should tell him." I just said I can't. "He likes you too!"

"No he doesn't. If he did, why did he marry your mom?"

"Uncle J, just talk to him!"

"MJ please understand that I can't...." She pulled out her phone and started typing. "What are you doing?" Before she answered, someone knocked on my door. Great...

"MJ?" Mike questioned from the other side of the door. I sighed again and opened it.

"Shes in here." I just left my door open and walked back into the house.

"J..."

"What do you want Mike?"

"What you said-" I cut him off quickly.

"I know, I shouldn't have said it. I'm sorry." I didn't want to talk about my mistakes. I knew he would want to but I just can't.

"Please just listen to me." I just walked into my room. I wont listen. He grabbed my wrist before I could shut the door. I thought he was going to hit me or something. But that didn't happen. Instead, he kissed me. He really kissed me. With MJ watching. In that moment I felt amazing. I, of course, kissed back. MJ seemed happy when we pulled away.

After that we had to figure out what we would do with Katie. It was hard but she accepted it. It really seemed like she already knew, even before we knew ourselves. So now, Mike and I live at his house. We take care of Mikes kids every other month. A little deal we worked out with Katie. And we make YouTube videos again. Everyone seemed so happy. That is the end of how two best friends found out their true feelings for each other.
