Because the goal of each level of Zombies Ate My Neighbors is to collect all of your neighbors, rather than defeating zombies, the threat of enemies can be continuous. Zombies can literally rise out of the ground to attack you wherever you are on the map- so while combat is definitely necessary to advance through the game, it’s not directly tied to the goal. In addition, the danger of neighbors becoming killed by enemies is a threat throughout, and players must collect at least one person before they’re all killed, or risk losing the game outright.
