could you tell us more head cannons about mike/Jess/Emily
alright let’s try my hand at this and give you guys some new content:
who do you think started the poly relationship? i’m pretty sure none of you are gonna guess correctly. did you think it was jess? or mike? or emily?
surprise, it was emily.
now here’s how it went down. mike liked both of them. jess liked both of them, but she was raised to think she had to “choose a team” (she only realized later that she was raised believing wrong). so when mike broke up with emily, he went after jess, and jess– well. she liked emily and mike, she really did, but mike was hot, right? and emily acted like she hated it, but she actually did tell jess “if you really like him, ugh, fine, i guess?” so.
jess went with mike.
and that was all well and good, right? jess was happy. mike was happy. emily was– well, emily was emily. emily acted like she was angry, but she was happy for them. but she was also jealous. she wanted– mike, or jess, or both of them? no. she wanted just jess. and you know what? why couldn’t she want jess? jess liked her too, emily was sure of it. what was so wrong with having your cake and eating it too? you could have three slices of cake, eat two of them and still have the third. that metaphor was stupid, but it worked.
they’d gone through hell by this point. it was the hiatus between season two and three, and they’d gotten a really fucked up location for the end of two. em had thought to herself, “so i like them jess, so what? she likes me. i know she does. what’s so wrong with that? what’s so wrong with that if mike consents?”
she just had to talk to mike.
which was exactly what she did. she cornered him during their off time back home, invited him out to coffee and then decided fuck it and brought it up on their drive home. “I like jess,” she told him. “figured,” he replied. he didn’t even flinch or look away from the street as he drove. “she likes both of us.” “figured that out too,” he said. so far, so good. “what if we– what if we both dated her?” emily posed. mike pulled over into the cul-de-sac emily lived in and parked the car before he replied.
he looked like he was actually thinking about it. he frowned and looked off into the distance, ran his hand through his hair, ruffled it up. he looked stupid like that. he’d always looked stupid like that. why had emily ever dated him? she liked girls way better. actually, she was pretty sure she only liked girls. it was a slow realization for her. she still hadn’t fully grasped it at this point.
“i mean,” mike said and looked over at her, met her eyes. “i’d be lying if i didn’t say i was down with it. you’d date– what, just her?” “yeah,” emily said. mike shrugged. “jess is dating me and you. sure. i don’t care.” he leered. emily knew he was gonna do it, so it didn’t even make her bat an eye. “everyone digs jess. good tastes. don’t blame you.”
emily snorted. “we should talk to her.” “she probably won’t get this is okay to want,” mike agreed. “when do you wanna talk to her?” he asked when emily made no move to reply. “soon. we shouldn’t let it keep being stupid like this.” “you mean her pining over you, and thinking i don’t notice?” emily flashed him a sharp smile. “of course she’s pining over me,” she replied. “good tastes.”
she got out of the car to the echoing sound of mike laughing.
they didn’t wait long. a week, maybe. emily did some research, read a few sites that had good information. she talked to mike about it in a new text message chain from their regular group one with jess, got his input. he agreed to most of it, and they agreed they would talk to jess before figuring anything else out. they sat her down and put everything in front of her.
“i like you,” emily said. jess paled and looked at mike, then back at emily. emily waved at mike and said, “he knows. i talked to him about it, because i didn’t want to say anything and freak him out.”
“oh,” jess replied. she still looked a little freaked out.
“there’s this thing,” emily said and pushed the papers toward her. printed off a couple things for her to read. “polyamory. people do it.” jess looked between them one last time before she finally started to look over the papers emily had brought. “i like you. mike likes you. you like both of us. it’s a thing. it’s a thing that can happen as long as everyone is fine with it.”
“i’m fine with it,” mike uttered just to be sure his girlfriend understood.
“you– you are?” jess looked at him and there was worry written clear on her face. mike nodded. “you’re fine with emily liking me?” “and you liking emily,” mike agreed. jess looked between them. “you already talked about this?”
“didn’t want to make it weird,” emily admitted. “figured mike would be willing to forget it if he didn’t like the idea.”
“i like the idea,” mike assured. “love it. best idea. wow, can’t believe i didn’t think of it.”
“shut the fuck up, you perv.” emily didn’t even look at him. her eyes were only for jess. “you don’t have to answer right now. you can go home. think about it. read up on stuff. i know you’re like me in that regard.”
jess swallowed. emily could track the movement as her throat moved. “okay,” she agreed. that was enough. it would be enough for almost a month. jess told her i’m still thinking whenever she poked her a little just to make sure the idea was still there, floating around.
finally, she sat them both down again the night before the third season shooting would start. “okay,” she said. “i want to try. if you’re both okay with that?” they both nodded. they were more then okay with it. mike had started praying that jess would be okay with it. “she’s just better when she has us both,” he admitted. emily had been blown away. she hadn’t known mike could be thoughtful. that was fucking weird.
“so i’m dating… both of you?” “yeah,” mike said. emily nodded. “but you’re not dating each other?” jess wondered. emily and mike both shook their heads. “that ship has sailed,” mike told jess. “and gotten torpedoed,” emily agreed. “wow,” mike said. “fuck off,” emily quipped.
jess laughed. “okay,” she said and her smile lit up her face, reached her eyes, made her glow. “okay,” they both said, and were a little dumbfounded looking at the blonde’s face.
wow, emily thought. we’re fucked. they were so screwed. they were so in love.
