The common people cover discourse is so irritating as a fan of both mcr and pulp oh my godd
The cover itself is not offensive or trying to change the song in any way, it’s fine to personally dislike it but I’ve seen some pulp fans acting like mcr “ruined” the song and tried to change the meaning when they kept it lyrically the exact same and never insinuated a new meaning. And Gerard has given massive credit to pulp and Britpop as an influence to him so I don’t understand why some people act like covering a song is some sort of attempt to steal it or one up the original when it’s clearly a homage out of love
HOWEVERR I do agree the people misinterpreting “common people” to mean “normal” people and bragging about not being common are incredibly stupid and tone deaf 😭😭 it’s incredibly unsubtly about classism and you’d think it’s a good idea to know the lyrics of a song before speaking about its meaning, even if it’s not their intention it’s still weird and classist to brag about not being “common” . It cannot be that hard to understand what the song is about it’s very on the nose
I don’t see why people are blaming mcr for this though, they didn’t change the intended meaning of the song at all and they can’t control their fans’ ability to comprehend things. Also the cover has literally always been available to me and I assume everyone in the uk, in all this time I’ve never seen anyone get offended and see the cover as classist nor have I seen anyone listen to it and assume it’s about being different to the norm sooo clearly it’s not the cover itself causing the issue . If it was then this would’ve happened ages ago . It’s just SOME of the people who’ve only just got access to the song are classist and have no ability to interpret very obvious meanings
Tldr if you think “common people” is a song about being alt and not wanting to be the norm you’re stupid however it’s not mcrs fault that some of their fans are stupid also stream both bands
