It was a sloppy job, Killian wasn't proud of that. He'd rushed to get here and rushed his surveillance and there were so many extra factors that a lessor thief would have just walked away. But Killian wanted this Monet, he'd been chasing it for ages and now it was right here, in New York being restored outside of the museum. Highly unusual, and perhaps his best chance to get his hands on this painting. 

The restorer's studio was tucked away in the back garden, separate from the house. In his short span of surveillance, he hadn't noticed any alarms, not much more than a padlock that was laughably easy to get off with some bolt cutters. Slipping quietly into the studio, he winced a bit as the hinges creaked, but it wasn't like there was a reason to care if he made noise - he was breaking into an empty studio away from the main house. So long as he didn't linger several hours until morning or somehow make a ridiculous amount of noise, Killian could make it in and out one Monet richer.

Slipping into the dark, Killian carefully started to look through all of the canvases that littered the studio. He could almost smell how close he was to finding his Monet when a creaking step behind him made Killian freeze.

First of all, we see Milah interact with Rumples all of... six times that I can remember? In Manhattan we have her talking to him before the war, light and happy and both of them in love with the other, then we have after the war and Milah is understandably horrified that her husband (who she believed in until she saw the rumours were true) has just condemned them to the lowest and most reviled position in society through his cowardice. In the Crocodile, we're introduced to the Milah/Rumples relationship when Milah calls Rumples a coward and insults him, she'd drunk and angry and yeah, she's pretty fucking rude. But we also see that Rumples has brought the sleepy Bae from home to emotionally manipulate Milah (Some pot and kettle action going on here). Next we're in their home, and away from the crowd and other people, Milah and Rumples seem more sad than angry and bitter. Milah's even willing to keep giving their marriage chances (she loved him once after all) and it's Rumple's refusal to even give them a chance at a life without the stigma he's forced them into that is the last straw before Milah leaves him. After that, he doesn't see Milah until years later, and even then, it's pretty fucking cordial until the topic of Bae comes up and culminates in Milah getting her heart ripped out. Six moments out of a relationship that is years and years long and not black and fucking white. My mother and stepfather have a very loving and strong and healthy marriage, but I can easily call up six or even more moments that seen alone could paint the picture of an abusive marriage. Also, abusers abuse for the power of it all, if Milah really was 'abusive' then why the fuck did she leave Rumples? It doesn't make sense, in abusive relationships it's the abused that leaves, not the abuser.

Milah was unarmed and not attacking when Rumples killed her. Rumples was the fucking Dark One, do you think thirty fucking pirates are even a match for a man who turns people into slugs and steps on them for yelling at his son? Who kills his mute serving maid because 'she can draw a picture' of the knife? Milah was completely defenseless against Rumples and Rumples knew it. He didn't kill her because of eminent danger, he killed her because she made him angry and he did it in an horrible and violating manner. Milah was surrounded by crew, had a sword on her waist and she could do nothing to stop her death.

MIlah did a lot of horrible things, she ran away from her marriage and child to save herself from a situation that was toxic for all three of them. But it was something she faced and accepted her actions for what they were, horrible. Rumples on the other hand, blames others for his actions; he doesn't do things to people but because other people have done them to him.

This isn't an admirable frame of mind, it's one that denies the responsibility for ones actions which is at it's core a cowardly thing. And what's worse, is that even through his 'redemption arc', Rumples has somehow managed to deftly avoid addressing any of his prior actions beyond 'I was pretty horrible wasn't I? YOLO". (A good example of a character struggling and confronting past deeds as part of their 'redemption' would be the aborted attempt to make Regina's magical addiction and struggle to do the right thing in the beginning of season two but what is consistency with OUAT)

But nothing Milah did to Rumples could ever make her deserve the death she suffered. Nothing. Because she isn't Rumples possession, he didn't buy her when he married her and she is free to make the choices that best suit her needs. And more over, she knew what she did was wrong and apparently struggled with her guilt.

Rumples on the other hand, barely seems to feel bad for anything beyond letting go of Bae's hand. Not about committing mass murder or torture for funzies, just letting Bae go. And while it's touching he loves his son so much, it's fucking disturbing as hell how much leeway fandom gives this unrepentant killer and how they attack his victims for daring to be victims of Rumples wrath.

Safe to say then, while this blog is to an extent multishipping, Milah will always be the great love of Killian's life and nothing will ever change that
