i guess i just always assumed he killed peter for his own sense of vengeance for him killing laura for no other reason than to be alpha. i have never felt like derek ever wanted to be alpha at all, but wasnt thinking in the heat of the moment. idk

i think if it was just about vengeance he would have let scott kill him and also the "i'm the alpha now" and all the excitement he displayed about it later i think verifies it wasnt just vengeance he was after, he saw an opportunity and took it
