I Want To Go Back
Words: 871 Genre: Fan Fiction / Drabble Fandom(s): DC & Superman / Original (Luminaria) Characters: Kristina Darling , Clark Kent Summary: Kristina proposes something a little crazy to her superboyfriend. Woo.
----------------------------------------
"Clark? Clark, can I ask you a question?"
She was nervous and it was showing. Fingers enclosed around the blessed water around her neck, and her other hand was tapping a fast-paced rhythm against her thigh. There was something Kristina wanted to do. Something she felt she had to do. And she knew that the proposal would be met with severe opposition. She knew it. And that's why she had to ask. This time she had to ask instead of going on her own and having him find her. Instead of having Mathew worry over her. Or even Gus, or Sigyn. It wasn't fair.
This time she was going to ask.
Clark looked up from what he was doing with raised eyebrows and for a moment, she faltered. It was like going full circle for them, wasn't it? And that's why she couldn't lose her resolve. She would be okay. She could talk to Sigyn, surely there were wards or... something she could take to protect her. Wasn't she friends with that... other goddess? The one that was always with her dogs? Goddess of Magic, wasn't it? Mat would hate it, and Sigyn would probably advise her against it, but... while she cared for them, it wasn't their permission she needed.
"I want to go back to the islands."
"Krissy, I don't thi--"
"Hear me out." The hand that had been tapping against her thigh raised in a stopping motions. "Clark, please, just hear me out. I want to go back to the islands, and I want you to go with me. I want to show you my home. My house. Where I grew up." And she wanted to retrieve the Shrine from there, but that was less important. "They're trapped there, you know. The souls of those who died in the eruption. So, in a way, I want to go back with you... so maybe... maybe..."
She almost lost it there, and she could tell he saw it. He was on his feet before she realized it and she gratefully accepted the embrace offered to her. Wrapping her arms around him, she let out a long breath and shook her head before looking up at him.
"So maybe my family can meet you. And I know it sounds insane, and stupid, and dumb, but... I feel like I have to do it. I need to know that they know I'm happy."
"It... It doesn't sounds insane, Krissy." Clark moved a hand to brush against her cheek, and she fought the urge to laugh. It wasn't that long ago that she would've recoiled away from such a touch--had recoiled from it. But, he was safe. Clark Kent had always been safe for her. Even before she fell in love. "But, it can't be good for you to go back. Look what happened last time."
"I know, I know. But, I'll take precautions. I'll talk to Sigyn, and even Hecate--if I must--and you can fly us there and back. The less exposure the better, and I promise not to freak out on you in the air. Just to the house. Just long enough to say hi and..."
"And?" he prompted, an eyebrow raising again.
X-Ray vision apparently worked well in seeing through her.
"My mother had this wonderful shrine to the Mother there. It was made of this brilliant crystal that turned colors based on the day and season, and the water that flowed there was blessed. If the wate is still pure... the Shrine might be untouched. And... after what happened to mine..." She trailed off, ignoring the dull throb of pain that came from her arm and leg at the memory. "I thought I could bring it back, get it cleansed and... have it here. For us."
Bringing anything back from the Borderlands was risking business. Dark magic could still cling to those things and invade the good parts of the world, but this was so important to her that she had to try.
"I don't have to, though! If you don't think we should. It's just... worth a shot, right?"
"If it is not tainted, I will bring it back for you." It wasn't exactly what she said, but he wasn't saying no. "If it is, though..."
"Leave it. If it's tainted, just leave it."
The breath that left her lips was ragged and tired, and Kristina buried her face against his chest, closing her eyes. She hoped it wasn't tainted. It wasn't like there were any temples left, any priests who could bless another for her. They'd all been destroyed in the First War.
"Thank you," she muttered into his shirt, tightening her arms around him. "But, you're telling Mat if he starts yelling at me, okay?"
That prompted a laugh, which made her smile in response.
"Okay. Okay, I will reassure Mat when he starts to yell at you. I promise. Hey. We could bring Krypto, too."
"Oh, yeah, he'd love it. All the ghostly winds he can chase."
They both laughed and she pulled away to look up at him, "Really. Thank you. For saving me." Without waiting for a response, Krissy pushed up on the balls of her feet to kiss him.
"I love you."
