Dr. Mildred Jefferson was the first Black woman to graduate from Harvard Medical School. She was also a trailblazer in the early pro-life movement, a founding member of the National Right to Life Committee who is often credited as someone who influenced Ronald Reagan's conversion to the anti-abortion cause.

Today it is the unborn child; tomorrow it is likely to be the elderly or those who are incurably ill. Who knows that but a little later it might be anyone who has political or moral views that do not fit into the distorted new order?

Dr. Mildred Jefferson

When she was 16 years old, Mildred Jefferson earned her bachelor’s degree from Texas College, before going on to Tufts University for her master’s. In 1951, she became the first black female to graduate Harvard Medical School and the first female surgeon at the former Boston University Medical Center. As a physician, a woman, and a person of color, she spoke fervently against abortion and eugenics, co-founded the National Right to Life Committee, and received 28 honorary degrees during her lifetime from a variety of institutions. She was also a direct cause of former President Ronald Reagan’s change from being pro-choice to supporting the pro-life movement.
