The personality of the King of Cups is a combination of the positive water energy of the Cups suit and the active, outward focus of a King. He is wise and understanding, with a deep knowledge of the world that comes from the heart. He is a teacher and way-shower who guides his students with loving attention. He cares about others sincerely and always responds to their needs with compassion. He heals with a gentle touch and a quiet word. He is calm and relaxed in all situations, seeming to know intuitively what is called for at any moment. Others turn to him for advice because they know he will listen attentively. There is always a peacefulness around him that others respond to. He is tolerant of all points of view and shows patience in the most trying circumstances. He gives others freedom to grow and develop in their own ways without asking anything in return.

In readings, the King of Cups asks you to take the kinds of actions he might take. For example: responding calmly in a crisis, using diplomacy rather than force, reaching out to help, or accepting a different point of view. The stingray symbolizes sensitivity, restraint, protection, and maneuverability. Stingrays have a heightened sense of touch and often show up around Empaths or “feeling” psychics that pick up on the energy and emotions of others.

Stingrays blend into their surroundings on the ocean floor and are not aggressive unless provoked. When they feel threatened they use a poisonous barb to defend themselves that can be lethal. Stingrays go to great lengths to protect themselves and avoid conflict, but will defend themselves when necessary.

Stingrays may be telling you to not overreact to your emotions, to calm down and wait before reacting. Stingrays maneuver themselves quite well despite their size and shape and they tell us to also carefully maneuver the complex emotional waters of our inner world. Balance and restraint are strong themes of this totem animal. When it appears to you consider your actions carefully and allow your intuition to guide you rather than raw emotion.

The Japanese recognized these fish not just for their beauty, but for their ability to transform the observer into otherworldly states of perception. These altered states of perception ultimately lead to the attraction of high energy - and this manifests in the form of prosperity of all kinds in our lives. This ability comes from their elaborate colors and fluid motion. Additionally, much animal symbolism of fish comes from their watery world. Water is the realm of motion, emotion, dreams and the psyche. It’s no wonder these creatures capture our imaginations!

Here at Black Nerd Problems, we love us some magical girls, we also happen to love us some queer and diverse characters in our favorite mediums.

We have a fondness for creators who give us both and Mildred Louis is such a creator we love to see making moves. Lauren and I were quick to support the first Kickstarter campaign for Louis’ first collected volume of her Agents of the Realm webcomic. Running since 2014, it made the 2018 Cartoonist Studio Prize Shortlist for best webcomic and remains a fave due to its creator’s consistent work and detail that goes into the narrative each week.

Norah, Adele, Kendall, Paige, and Jordan are college freshmen at Silvermount University. While they’re trying to maintain passing grades and a consistent sleep schedule, they’re given the daunting task of being magical guardians of their realm. Now the adventure continues in Volume 2 as we dive into the tension between their mentor Jade and her corrupted twin sister Ruby Blackwater.

As an avid fan of Louis’ work and also the struggles and adventures of Norah and the girls, I’ve been sitting, trying to pinpoint why Agents of The Realm speaks to me. Granted the magical girl genre will always have my heart, I know that it has always drawn me because of the focus of girls and female characters. Girls and women are the heroes, they save the day. They support their friends. They stumble and attempt to figure out love. They are the ones doing things and having agency. Quite simply: girls empower and inspire in these stories.

Norah, Adele, Kendal, Paige, and Jordan are young women who are characters influenced by the magical girl genre yet are creations that strike home with themes and lessons that hit a little closer as I am older. The girls are college students, they are figuring out of to navigate the world as adults, they are managing pressures and stresses that sound familiar to me and certainly so many others who call themselves readers.

I’ve come to see Agents of the Realm as a coming of age story with distinct themes of identity and figuring out your path. I want to see another volume collecting more of their story. I want to see more hilarity and awkward moments. I want to see more epic world building and more focus on the relationships and everything that matters. The Kickstarter campaign for the second volume of Agents of The Realm officially ends on August fifteen and Louis is only halfway to her funding goal–LET’S GET THIS ONE FUNDED, Y’ALL.

Agents of the Realm

Agents of the Realm is a delightful magical girl webcomic about a group of young women at college. There’s magic, monsters, a parallel world, an arcane threat, and exactly as many sparkly outfit transformations as we expect from the genre.

The cast is predominantly women of color, and predominantly queer. From left to right, above, the main five ladies are Norah (Black/Dominican, questioning/will question when she gets around to it), Adele (Latina/Brazilian, aromantic heterosexual), Kendall (White, lesbian), Paige (Hispanic/Mexican, bisexual), and Jordan (Asian/Filipino, pansexual).

We get flashbacks to two of the previous Agents getting engaged, as well as a budding romance between Jordan and her crush Mackenzie (who is trans, though this part of her identity has not been covered in-story so far), and there are apparently a lot more queer romances to come!

Creator Mildred Louis discusses representation in her work in this interview: “Growing up, I didn’t really come across much representation of WoC in Queer romances. This ended up really messing up how I saw myself and that aspect of my identity. As much as it’s important to show queer content, it’s also just as important to diversify how that content is presented.”
