Good morning! I know ECCC is pretty popular, but which day do you consider the more “relaxed”? My parents are interested in going to the convention, but at least one of them can get pretty anxious when surrounded with a lot of people, so I was thinking in bringing them the day with less crowd. Any advice will be appreciated, thanks! 😋

Hey! If you’re looking for a quieter day, Thursday is going to be your best bet. It’s the start of the show so the energy is still very high, but because it’s still “during the week” the amount of people at the show is a little lighter.

Interview with Kevin Wada

Just catching up with @kevinwada before ECCC, which is right around the corner! See what we got to ask him...

What is different about ECCC versus other shows you’ve been to?

ECCC has the size and crowds of a BIG show but the energy and attitude of a show that's intimate, and supportive.  It's been one of my favorite shows of the convention circuit since I first came a couple of years ago.

Have a favorite ECCC moment from the past?

One year, a father showed up with his daughter's prom dress and I took a photo with it because I wouldn't get a chance to meet her as she had to run straight from the con to her dance.  She later tagged me in a post with plenty of gorgeous pictures of her at her prom and it was just a really cute moment.

Who inspires you?

Honestly, too many to name but I wanted to answer this question because at the moment I am utterly obsessed with Frazer Irving.  His work has attitude and style for days, so much flow and texture.  He's really just a fabulous artist.

Do you have a morning routine or a way to warm up before you work?

My morning routine consists of lots of water, a small breakfast, sometimes coffee (trying to break myself of the dependency).  Then I head to the gym for a quick workout, get the blood flowing, and then I head to "my office," which is our guest room.  I've been doing these little headshots of characters as warmups/to keep me sitting at my desk but they've sort of taken on a life of their own.

What is your favorite project to have worked on? 

Looking back now, I'd have to say my run on She-Hulk.  It was just the absolute right fit, tonally, with an editor who really trusted me to do my thing and have fun with it.  Most recently I got to do some variants for The Runaways and that was a total treat as well.

Interview with Cryssy Cheung

We got to ask artist @cryssycheung a few questions about being an artist and some of her favorite things. Get to know her with us! 

What is your favorite medium to create in? Digital - more specifically, creating vectors in Adobe Illustrator. Illustrator and I are actually birthday twins! Oh crap - now you know how old I am! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What is your drink order? Non-alcoholic: Tea. Earl Grey. Hot. Alcoholic - Gin & Tonic or an Old Fashioned

When you’re in Seattle, what do you have to do before you leave? I have to go to Pike's Place and get a clam chowder. Can't remember the name of the restaurant, but it's inside of Pike Place Market!

Do you have any pets? 2 Cats! The black and white one with the mustache is Lady, and the other one is  Boopi (aka Pup aka Pastrami), who is her son. 

How did you get discovered?  Just by doing conventions and working hard at it. I learn something new every time I do a convention. Reedpop shows are great for meeting industry     connections, whether it's other artists or editors and publishers.

Interview with Doc Shaner

If you haven’t heard of the man of mystery that is @evandocshaner, we got a little behind the scenes peek at the life of an artist like him. Check out our interview with him here!

Who is your favorite superhero/comic character? Somewhere between Superman and Captain Marvel. I can't pick just one.

When you’re in Seattle, what do you have to do before you leave? With the way the convention tends to take up most of the time while I'm there, it usually has to do with food. Mitch Gerads, Joe Quinones, Michael Walsh and I found Li'l Woody's a few years ago and I really enjoyed the burger I had there. Last year a bunch of us from DC went to Trove, which is relatively new if I understood correctly, but Gerads and I are already planning a return trip there. Someday I'd love to actually walk around Seattle during the day and see some things, ha! 

Do you have any pets? I do! A beagle named Friday.

How did you get discovered? The internet! Turns out if you draw and post nothing but superheroes for years eventually people will ask if you'd like to do it for money. Sometimes. I can't guarantee that.

What is your favorite project to have worked on? I've been fortunate to work on a number of dream projects the last few years, but the book that stands out for me these days is Flash Gordon from Dynamite. I'm very proud of that book and what Jeff, Jordie, and I were able to do with it.
