Mildred's was on my friend's list because she had heard and read rave reviews of the blueberry pancakes. I was a little surprised because she is not a big sweet eater, but I was happy to check it out. I enjoy pancakes and dont eat breakfast much, except when traveling. So this could be a nice treat!! Mildred's Temple kitchen is a very large restaurant with a definite tourist vibe. I dont say that in a negative way, it just seems that it caters more to out of town guests more than locals. Thankfully, we had made a reservation, because even with one, we waited for 15, 20 minutes. The host seemed a little disorganized, which wasnt a great first impression. Once seated, we saw how large the restaurant actually is! And we were there on a Monday, so they clearly do great business!! We knew we were getting the pancakes, but looked at the menu to see what else would accompany. We were hungry so I suggested the biscuits with apple butter to start. It was perfect to begin with, 3 warm biscuits, on the more doughy side, served with regular and apple butter. They were quite tasty, if a little heavy. There were 3 of us, so one biscuit each was plenty. We decided to get the pancakes to share as a next course and then choose our breakfast or lunch entree. For mine, I ordered Little Kay's favorite grilled cheese. I added their rosemary bacon to my sandwich. The pancakes arrived, presented beautifully, and we split them onto 3 plates to share. They weren't blueberry pancakes, per se, but topped with whipping cream and blueberry compote. The pancakes were also a denser consistency but still very good. I'm not a big blueberry fan but the compote wasnt overly sweet so I really enjoyed it. A full order as my main course would have definitely been too much. Splitting it 3 ways for a starter was just right!! The grilled cheese came with a small salad but I upgraded to the soup of the day, which was butternut squash! The soup was creamy and flavorful, a great side to the sandwich, which was rich and cheesy. The bacon made it heartier and their bacon was particularly good, thick cut and the rosemary wasnt overpowering. What put it over the too was their house made scotch bonnet pepper hot sauce!! It was very hot, from a hot sauce lover, and very flavorful!! It was just the addition the sandwich needed to jump it from very good to outstanding!! Even though it's a bit touristy and you might have to wait, Mildred's Temple kitchen is definitely worth a visit for either breakfast or lunch. They have a good sized menu with many options for either meal period. Try their famous pancakes, for sure, but share them either as a starter or for dessert. It seemed a little out of the way from downtown but was still easily reachable by Lyft or taxi. Definitely make a reservation, especially if you plan on going over the weekend, as it is a very popular spot! Have a great day!!
