Man, I hope when I'm done with my novel and its out in the world that people write fucked up porn with Miles and R.

Miles North, my most favorite original character, floating on some nanites. He's the main character of the novel I'm writing, and also the character I'm playing in a Cyberpunk RED campaign. I like talking about him, so never be afraid to ask. (For those of you who have read Survivors, yes it's that Miles but I pulled him into a different setting, and yes R is still attached to him.)

A version of Miles got a happy ending! (Our year long Cyberpunk RED campaign ended last night.) If anyone wants a plot breakdown of that I'll share sometime under a cut. Now I just have to get the other two versions to their endings. (I've now scared every reader that is still waiting on Survivors to update. What do you mean "their endings"? and not "their happy endings"?? You'll see.)

I'm gonna blabber about my OC's now, please excuse me.

Sometimes you think you know a character cuz you've been writing them for so long, I've had Miles since 2013, sometimes you think you know everything about them. Then you switch the setting a bit, you roleplay them instead of just write them by yourself, and you realize, oh shit, there's way more in here than I thought.

Survivors Miles is still tied to the fact that he's in a fanfic. Granted, its a fanfic I've taken pretty far off the rails, but he's still in a fanfic. While I don't think how I write him is going to change much, it can't really, I've already done like, 600 pages of groundwork for his personality, I would be lying if I didn't think about some of things that happened in Cyberpunk RED even for him.

The real shift will be in the novel version. I've done so, so, so much thinking about Miles over the past year, while a lot will stay the same, there's a bunch of plot elements I'm adding, characters that I never would have thought for him will be included. He's going to get a daughter! That's wild to me. I never would have thought of Miles as a father, he's always been my disaster journalist. The one picking himself up off the bathroom floor, who got too fucked up at a club, who self destructed all his major relationships. There's no way he could raise a kid, even a teen. But here I am, giving him that. (He's also still a disaster don't worry. He's still snarky, still uses dark humor to cope, and still wants to expose the truth above all else. As much as he's changed he's also stayed the same at his core.)

How I'm approaching his relationship to being a weapon... in the Cyberpunk RED story I played Miles with an incredibly strict "no kill" policy. In a game with combat as brutal as Cyberpunk that was a challenge. It became a core of his character, he does not kill. (He did one murder but it was Technomancer so like, I mean... if I gotta kill someone that's not a bad pick.) In Survivors Miles kills a lot of people, it s a core conflict he has. But in the end he's kinda sorta ok with it. Kinda. I want to take that hard line I made for the tabletop version of Miles and blend it with the novel version who was originally more ok with violence. I want to really lean in on the way he's been changed without his consent into a weapon and how that breaks a part of him, how he thinks of himself after that, and it'll make fights in the novel more interesting. He used to just consider violence a necessary means to an end, now I think I'll have him be more hesitant in fights. More reluctant to use the full extent of his powers. Compared to Survivors, at this point in the story, Miles is more or less ok with letting himself be what he is and do what he was designed to do.

On the flipside there's R. I think it's very interesting that while Miles has changed a lot, R is still my consistent rock. Even after Cyberpunk RED where he was a character, how I've seen him will not change. I've only grown more confident in exactly how I write him. I know what I want from R, and I've always known what I've wanted from R. He's similar to the fanfic version, very similar, afterall he's been my character this whole time. But the novel version is just ever so slightly different. It comes from the shift in setting, he's able to do things he wasn't able to do in Survivors, and in return there's things he can do in Survivors that he can't do in the novel. Project Walrider and Project OverRide are similar enough but also vastly different in their powersets, but R himself gets to stay pretty much the same.

Cyberpunk RED also made me totally rethink my approach to Julian. Julian is also 100% my OC and he was created for the fanfic as a background character for Miles. In the novel I upgraded him to a member of the main cast. This was always going to happen. But I've overhauled his story after this campaign because I realized a lot of things about Miles and about Jules from how they played in the table top game. I fed the DM Julian and Miles' novel backstory and he stayed really close to it. But as I was going through the story week after week I decided a few things for the novel, mostly how I'm approaching their relationship. Because I learned I'm actually incredibly fond of getting Miles and Julian back together.

Slight spoilers for Survivors, for whoever is still reading that. But I had always planned on Miles and Waylon being endgame for that fic, it doesn't have a focus on shipping at all, but I've always been a camerashipper at heart.

But in the original novel "Waylon" got a complete overhaul, and originally I was still planning on that character getting together with Miles. But the more I sat with it, and the more I roleplayed Miles fixing his life and getting back with Jules, the more I realized that I actually do want to tell that story instead, I want Miles to fix himself and fix his relationship with Jules instead of getting with a totally new character. Not saying that poly is out of the question, just right now, I think I'm pivoting the relationships. (Also the novel isn't relationship heavy either, but it will come in.)

I've just had... thoughts. And I know some of the people who follow me here are still here from my Outlast days, so I figured it might be interesting to those people to see some character thoughts. Even if its about the OC version. (Also I do promise I'll finish up Survivors after I finish You Pay the Cost. That's not an empty promise, I will see Miles, Waylon and R to their end.)

I think I'll throw the first few chapters of the novel up on AO3 when they're in a state that I feel is good enough to share. I've been working hard in the background for this story and it's really getting somewhere now. I'm excited to share their adventures in Capital RingPort City with you.
