our hc for miles (which easily could be deeply wrong) is that theyre like... kind of aware but not fully. and their love for sonic (the character and especially thw fascimile) stops them from assuming anything weong is happening. they still feel fear but its primal and they dont always understand why they feel it. and although theyre scared they still look up to their "big brother", trust them and rely on them for comfort (even if the only "comfort" sonic gives is harm misinterpreted as such)

i think if hes aware inside that ring or if he ever gets out, if you asked him hed say the whole hide n seek thing was just a mean prank At Worst, and probably would just say it was an accident, that the two were just havinf fun and nothing really went wrong - he and sonic are both here, they're both together, so nothing went wrong
